Amex card travel insurance

Hi All,

Another question about the insurance coverage. My wife was on QF107 yesterday that ended up leaving 5 hours late, and after 3 hours in LAX customs she missed a booking on United (seperate booking). I asked her to call Amex to find out what the coverage was (Amex Plat charge card) and she was told that they would cover hotels and meals, but not any costs to rebook if United made her buy another ticket.

Does this sound right? All previous policies I've had covered missed flights, so I had just assumed this one would as well...

Any thoughts?

Thanks...

Well I can comment on the Amex platinum insurance after placing a claim for the Ash cloud last month.

I activated the emergency $700 and claimed a total of about $640.

After QF supplied a cancellation letter (took about 10 days) I filed the rest of my claim and within a few days I received an email saying the amount was being deposited into my account. Very happy with the process and how quickly it was done..

That alone justifies the card fee for another year!

The flight was booked on points too, the only thing I had to do was purchase the hotel taxis etc on my plat card ( which they told me after I called to use the emergency money).

This seems to be missing from the Amex policies. I was on a Island in Fiji a few months ago. We got away fine - but the scheduled transfer for siome friends who stayed on broke down. They were unable to make their flight as a result. The options were either get a heli to the airport, or fly the next day (only J was available). Their travel insurance company paid for the Heli. I thought I'd check the Amex policy and this event definitely was not covered. Isn't this one of the key reasons to have insurance ?

Few TI policies cover the cost of new/revised flight bookings when misconnects occur. Airlines themselves will generally only cover a misconnect if the flights are on the same booking (PNR). If they are separate booking then you are SOL.

Yes, but it seems to me like something that should be covered by a decent policy - particularly if connecting from one form of scheduled transport to another.

I have come into this thread a bit late but am happy to use AMEX Insurance (Platinum Card Version);

When caught in SIN due to Volcanic event the Insurance covered all expenses - claim ended up around $8,000 .
Handled quickly and promptly by ACE.

Thanks to the forthcoming changes to the plat charge card travel insurance policy I've decided to make as much use as I can of it over the next few months and put in a claim wherever possible while excesses are still non-existent.

Most recent success has been claiming for an iphone that fell into a hotel toilet while I was interstate for work. Claim submitted online for new phone, 5 days later I got an e-mail saying that all was approved, money would be in the bank within a week and a note saying "we want to request the item to be sent to the following office address for recovery process. Not sure what they want to recover, but good luck to them!

Cheers

I suspect it is more an anti-fraud procedure, just making sure the iPhone exists!

People want to defraud insurance companies? Surely not! </sarcasm>

I guess it makes a change from insurance companies defrauding policy holders...

I could offer to take a photo of the old phone with my new one, but I guess they're not that trusting.

Cheers

I assume it's Ace Insurance that requires the iPhone? I claimed for a broken handle on a suitcase last year and they paid for a new suitcase but wanted me to send them the old one. They aren't far from where we live so I dropped it in. I don't think they intended to repair and resell the suitcase. I'm sure oz_mark is spot on - it's an anti-fraud measure.

Yep, it's the untrusting insurance company. TBH they can have the phone, it's dead to me and doesn't work nearly as nicely as the iphone 4S they've just paid out for.

To their credit, they gave me an office address here in ADL to send the phone to. I'll drop it in at some point in the foreseeable future and save on postage costs.

Cheers
