amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Another interesting feature of this card is the Car Hire Damage Cover. It covers up to $100000.

Mind if I ask how far you were under, and whether you indicated you wanted to apply for this as a second card or for this to replace your existing card?

When I applied for Virgin last year, it was 15k under and about 7k under for this Explorer card. Amex didn't check with my accountant when applying for Virgin and then instant approval on this one. I applied as a second card after cancelling Virgin about a month ago while still holding Gold Accelerator (added Accelerator card number in application). My first card was from 2012 and I spent around 40-70k a year with Amex. Never pay late. Hope that helps. :)

I noticed that the Amex lounge passes allow all travelling children up to 17 in-handy for me as usually at dragons' mercy on family trips

Combine this with the Citi Prestige and you've got a better Visa spend also. I'll use this once my points drop on advertising spend (as I reach the $185k spend limit) on my Amex Bus Plat.

I'm guessing given it's a new card referral bonuses might not be out yet. Can anyone confirm?

Wow you must have accumulated a ton of points from that ridiculous spend. You might wanna look at the Citbank Diners if advertising payments accepts it. Those earn 3 pts per dollar spend across the board.

I just received my card. Looks less blue than I thought. Spent over $1,500 so should know soon if I will get a bonus point as an existing card holder.

I still cannot generate a referral link. Will try later.

Sadly not enough as you'd hope, but 2 SQ for every $1 I spend is not bad I guess :) Diners not accepted in my advertising methods.

How are you getting 2SQ per $1 spend?

It's only for advertising (google, facebook, SMH etc.) but we're O/T now :)

I just booked 2x Y fares with JQ yesterday - the $400 credit would've come in handy and essentially made this card free. Oh well - that's life, I know JQ have a strict refund policy.

Was just about to ask same question but it is clear in T's and C's - who reads them huh?

Yeah they have actually updated the Amex Business Plat earn to include other categories, when it launched it was advertising only

2 points per $1 spent at eligible restaurants, airlines, accommodation, foreign currency, advertising, couriers and computer equipment

It's not bad for an every day business card, I also use this card to buy flights, book hotels etc then pay it back to the business. Once you hit the 375k point/$187k limit this new Explorer card will come in handy at 1.5 points/$1.

Coming up to my Platinum charge anniversary (got it for 120k sign up & to switch some Citi spend last year now all is forgiven).Like the effective 1.5ppd earn rate on all spend categories except government with Explorer.
Toying with the idea of closing Plat charge & reserve cards & applying for explorer to marry it up with Edge & Prestige. If I could get sign up bonus would be a nice kicker. Anyone applied for & received the bonus yet?

Looks interesting but this worries me.

"This introductory offer is available to new American Express Card Members only"

Already hold a vanilla Amex Platinum credit card that I do not want to lose but the bonus points on this would be nice and if the $400 travel credit can be used wholly against say a Qantas special BNE-BKK and earn QFF SCs and points then this would be a good deal. A 0% balance transfer for 12 months would be the icing on the cake.

Wait and see what pans out with the first few applications.
