amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Applied for card for my husband on 2nd January when the website was playing up so I assumed it hadn't gone through. Referral points hit my account on the 3rd, yet to hear anything about his application though!

You getting your points means that it will have been successful.

My wife applied on Dec 31 and her card arrived Jan 6. So he will probably get his mid next week. If nothing by Friday give them a call.

Next question is for everyone in the community. We'll be using all my accrued pts (took 3 years!) in Edge & KFF for a MEL-Europe redemption this year. Since I'm wiped out, we think my partner should be the next one to accrue pts (he currently has 57k KFF + 160k GW in his Explorer). I plan to gift 50k Gateway to him this year, but am unsure what to do with the remaining 60k in my card. My thoughts are to either transfer out & cancel (we plan to get a home loan) / attempt to relink to AS / keep everything as it is and gift another 50k GW in 2018 to help his pts accrual.

Thoughts?

Just a tad too late but you could have sent 50k before end of year and a further 50k this year! No fee on transfers within same point group.

Hi, just a quick note for anyone interested.

Once you have an explorer and plat charge linked together under ascent premium, explorer referrals still work and they generate 20K ascent premium points, which is a nice little bonus over the gateway points you would have got if they weren't linked.

Ditto if linked to an Edge.
Ditto for Supp Bonii

Nothing at all. Except if you have to establish your 100 points of idenity. AMEX, though, have never asked me to do this.

They do ask for your drivers licence (not quite a 100-points-level check, I know), which is an optional question but I've always answered it, I assume if you don't answer it they give you a ring?

Perhaps for the original application but they don't call you if you leave out the drivers licence number for supplementary cards.

Hi Guys,

I applied last month for the Amex Ultimate Card last month and recently reached the spend and got the points.

I am wondering if all OK for me to apply for the Explorer card and will I get the points also? Happy to use someone's referral link if they can provide me with the answer.

Thanks guys

Based on others' experiences, since you will be creating a different Rewards account (MR Gateway), you 'should' get the bonus points.

You will get them so long as you haven't had an MR Gateway account in the last 12 months. Ultimate doesn't use MR Gateway therefore, yes, you will get them.

hey everyone, I just applied for my explorer card, first tme im ever having an amex card, (I do have a bank amex)

unfrotuantely I didnt get instant approval and got the your application has been captured and processing within 5-10 days msg,

here are my key stats that I put in
current address 10 years, board/living with parents, salary $67k, $25k pa investment income, Full time 2 Years, no other amex, 1 other credit card $5k limit, $16k mortage repayments, zero dependants, no supp cards requested
the income might be an estimate though,
Credit score 750, 2 investment loans, no credit card applciations in the last 5 years, no defaults

is this a bad application?
dont really want to get rejected at the first step ;(

Yes you mostly certainly will get the points as they're two different programs.

Sounds better than me. I'm self employed and didn't even meet a minimum income requirement (used 57k to apply). 2 other CC applications before Amex in the same week (or maybe in 10 days). Credit score was 630 something. Got instant approval, probably from being Amex customer for a few years.

I think you are more likely to get an instant approval if you are an existing customer. My partner earns almost 3 times more than me with a credit score of 950 and used to be Amex customer but still got that 5-10 days message.

'no supp cards requested' This isn't a relevant factor. And something I suggest you rectify in order to take advantage of AMEX cash back offers.

'2 investment loans'. This is a very relevant factor and they may want some more details.

I wouldn't worry just yet though. AMEX is usually very generous in assessing applications.

I'm in quite similar circumstances and got approved for a $17.5k limit (of which I only took $10k).

Wow. I asked for only 3K!

Thanks eveyrone

I applied for 5k. Since I don't want any higher limits to affect my current or future applications

And thank God it wasn't a outright rejections.

The only thing is that if the verify income. Because I've had some time off and reduced my work load recently. My income won't stack up

AMEX have never asked for my pay slips or proof of income.

But I certainly wouldn't encourage anyone to provide misleading or unverifiable information in their applications.

Yeah, realistically I could probably have gone for 5k or 7k. I'm not planning on churning this card so 3k is too low, not a big spender but occasionally I go over that...

I wouldn't stress. I take it you're a new customer to AMEX? They're pretty lenient compared to the banks. I wouldn't be surprised if you had the card in the mail within the next 5 days without hearing anymore.
