amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

SSD CHEQUEMATE WEST MELBOURNE :-| Only 0.5 / $1 spent coughpp.... seems to me all points posted to my EDGE ( ascent ). I will try another different transactions to check if its 2ppd or not.

Good for you. Mine all went to ascent premium and can confirm I did not get bonus points

Are you sure? How long ago did you meet the minimum spend? I was certain that I missed out on the bonus points when I hit the minimum spend on the Edge (I held the charge at the time and both cards linked in the same login), however the points turned up around 8 days after the charges cleared (so timing for bonus points posting seems to be variable). Let us know if they turn up.

Just wondering if people with this card are able to refer friends? And if so, what the offer is? Guessing it can't be much better than the standard offering?

No, if you read back to earlier posts in this thread, AMEX have advised that no referral links can be generated as yet.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried swapping the free buddy card that you get with the Plat Charge for this Explorer card? Currently have plat charge + free reserve as buddy, and edge. Gonna have to give up one if I go for the Explorer, but if I can swap the Reserve for the Explorer I think I'd do it.

I don't have Plat Charge so can't be sure but I think I've read members above saying they have asked and received a no.
Good to hear of members holding Plat Edge' getting their points bonus on the Explorer. Still have my fingers crossed that I'll be as lucky.

I've asked to swap the reserve for the explorer as my companion to the platinum charge. They said no as the rewards programs are different.
Having said that my platinum edge is companion to my unused gold charge card although Gold is normally on MR and edge is on Ascent.

As I understand things MR = Membership Rewards and Ascent, Ascent Premium and Gateway are all MR Programs, but are different options . Gold is I believe normally in the Membership Rewards Ascent Program as is the Edge Card.

I have two Cards that are eligible for Membership Rewards. Can I link them together and pool my points?

If you have eligible accounts that are enrolled in the same program option, then yes, they may be linked. Please call us on the number at the back of your Card to organise this.

Hi lovetravellingoz. Thanks for clarifying that gold charge and edge actually are in the same program. For some reason I thought there were 3 MR tiers (excluding Gateway) when in fact there are 2.

As someone mentioned earlier, I'm only getting 1PPD for international transactions.

Have also spent well over $1500 now and so sign of the bonus points (points are posting to my ascent program)

I can report: I am getting 2ppd into ascent programs ( merged together with EDGE card ).

Spent above $1500 , and No bonus point :(

How long ago did the transactions clear? Sometimes it takes awhile for the bonus points to post.

About 3-4 working days now, Normally bonus points posted very fast ( I had own Edge, Velocity platinum, Qantas - bonus points posted next day ).
Hopefully amex proof me wrong this time - I wont refuse bonus points :D
even without bonus points, I am very happy with 2ppd ascent , I can make up the missing points by using the cards.

I'd wait a bit longer before panicking. My Edge bonus points took a full 8 business days to post a couple of weeks ago (and like you, I was convinced I wasn't going to get them , as previously the points had posted very quickly). Let us know if they turn up.

same situation as well - more than 1 week now. oh well.

Is there any advantage in having Reserve instead of Plat Edge as Charge Card companion card?

Can't wait to see what the referral bonus is like when it becomes open!

Longer Domsetic Flights and can go to New Zealand vs Shorter Domestic Flights with the Edge.

The big plus of the Edge is its 3 points / $ at Supermarkets. So if you it is a great contrast to earn rate of other Amex Cards whether they be Charge or Credit Cards.

Having the Explorer and the Edge is a great two card Amex Combination.
