amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Tiresome, but hopefully people are judicious in their use of referral links.

Prepare for a whole bunch of newbies to paste their referral links everywhere and not actually be involved on the forum.

Going off topic a bit here... I don't mind the direct referral link posting in the 'referral offers' thread (it's easy to bypass referrals if you don't want to read them - just avoid the referral offers section), and indeed posted my Explorer referral link there today... it's the somewhat inane commentary that is sometimes provided by users simply to generate exposure to referrals they've prominently placed in their signature that I find a bit tiresome, as I find it impacts negatively on the quality of posts. I subscribe to a number of threads and find it a bit disappointing to log in and see that someone with referrals boldly emblazoned in their sig has contributed a one word answer or smiley face to a thread simply to get the 'advertising' out there...

Perhaps referrals should be banned from signatures??? One for Admin, I guess.

Logged in today and am about $100 shy of reaching the minimum spend and Amex have already credited the bonus points.

Lots of love going Amex's way today.

Strangely when I follow my referral link it only shows Platinum Edge as available. Platinum Edge is now shown as having travel credit rather than a return flight

That's interesting. I regularly get $300-400 value out of the free flight each year.

I'm confused trying to understand the difference between the MR gateway points and MR ascent points (and any others if they exist). I am thinking of getting the explorer card to transfer MR points to SPG. Can this be done using the points from the explorer card and if so what is the conversion rate?. Apologies if this has been covered, my eyes started to glaze over after a while reading this forum.

Hi a330j,

The key differences in terms of the value of Gateway Membership Rewards vs Ascent Membership Rewards are as follows.

Airline point transfers with Gateway are 1:0.75 (Gateway MR:airline point (or mile)).
Airline point transfers with Ascent are 1:1 Ascent (Ascent MR:airline point (or mile)).
Transfer to SPG is actually the same at 1:0.5 (Gateway or Ascent MR:SPG point).
Gateway has the same airline transfer partners as Ascent except for Virgin Atlantic. Note, Qantas is only a transfer partner of Ascent Premium, not the standard Ascent program.

I hope that is helpful!

Btw, recently there was a 20% transfer bonus from SPG to AAdvantage (in addition to the standard 20k:25k ratio) which may be another consideration depending on your use of SPG points.

Well you can always raise it as a separate thread in Referral section, like what I have done in the past below:

http://www.australianfrequentflyer....rs/referral-offers-time-change-how-69257.html

When I raised that thread, there were like so many people posting referral links for the 110K Velocity points offer from people who had hardly posted or contributed to the forum. Then after some discussion in the thread the moderators step in.

Ultimately the moderators made their decision, and from there (a lot of us and) I decided to just post referral in accordance to the rules.

Thanks decs. Explains it perfectly. I am thinking of using the SPG points for accommodation in the USA. Will be travelling there next year.

I found that I have received the bonus points before my $1500 spend was done. Did everyone else experience the same thing?

also managed to split my explorer gateway from ascent premium to get the bonus 100k. a pity... was really enjoying the 2ppd on ascent premium from the explorer

Hi All
I only have a velocity card at the moment
If I sign up to this card, is there anyway to upgrade to the ascent program after to get the extra value from those types of points?
cheers
