amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Totally agree, even with the limited acceptance of AMEX in my town!

I cancelled mine and got a sup card to my husbands account while I wait out the 18 months to reapply- is that an option for you?

You are giving me ideas.
I might get a family member to apply

Yes! And the referral bonus is up to 30,000 for the referee. You can't lose! #notfinancialadvice

Whilst my referral link offers 30,000 points for me, it's only offering 60,000 points for those who sign up - so it's better for others not to use my link. Is your referral offer different?

Have you considered cancelling and then using a supplementary through a family member /friend over The 18 month period ?

that's disappointing! Usually the referral offer is better, but just checked, and hubby's is saying 60k also. Fingers crossed it'll catch up soon, have just sent feedback to AMEX.

SOPOOR- I take back what I said!

If you have an Explorer card, it should be 100k for anyone who uses your link. Have you checked your link again today? Mine is definitely saying 100k.

I wonder if it has anything to do with when you got the card?

definitely only saying 60k, this card came early Jan. When did you get yours?

was contemplating the platinum charge for the 100k but have seen the explorer come through with the new 100k offer (albeit converting at 0.75, and no QFF transfer).

any reason to take one over the other?

a few people suggested you could get the platinum reserve CC alongside the platinum charge, but amex website, and blog sites suggest that card was discontinued ages ago, so am confused. Decisions decisions!

Pointhacks have a 120,000 point offer for the Platinum Charge at the moment.

For me it depends on if the Platinum Charge benefits outweigh the annual fee of $1,200. The Explorer card is best card on the market for me especially when paired with Platinum Edge so you earn 2 airline miles per $.

The Platinum Charge card "comes" with the Platinum Reserve for free, but you have to apply separately for the card. I believe this is still the case, but best to call Amex and confirm this is still the case.

Once you have applied and received your card sign up for the Amex insurance offer and get a total of 120/90k points for a grand total of approx $450 versus the the 100k for $1200 with the charge.

platinum charge has a tiered earn rate which puts me off, only 300k at full earn rate!
explorer + edge with 2ppd uncapped for me wins every time, unless you need the extra travel benefits & "unlimited" limit

I still hold plat edge so can't/won't apply for the explorer.

My wife cancelled her only Amex (Velocity Plat) a couple of weeks ago so it may be worth the risk for the 100,000 sign on - Might give a month or so and see if anyone else posts their experiences.
