amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

My Partner has the Amex Explorer, tossing up getting her the edge and linking them for the 2 points. She will not be interested in making the phone call though. Is it easy to do? I assume they will not let me talk on her behalf? Has anyone had any luck linking via the online chat?

Finally called up AMEX on Tuesday night to link my explorer and edge. Not a problem and 36 hours later all points showing in Ascent account. Just gained an extra 30,000 FF points in the process so very happy. Thanks AFF!

I need to link up my explorer and edge this weekend (just received the edge). How did you go about asking them to link them up?

Just check out post number 2396. I said the same thing and was told that the accounts could be linked, not a problem.

Wasn't there an issue where after the accounts were linked the $400 travel voucher didn't happen automatically anymore or got wiped out? Is that still an issue after you've linked the Explorer to Ascent?

That happened to me. Then one of the Australian operators made some back end changes. Reckon it’s fixed now. Will be interesting to see what happens on my next Explorer anniversary when it resets.

I have already spent my $400 travel credit so it wasn't an issue for me.

Has anyone ever linked their Edge and Explorers successfully, only to discover that all points become MR, rather than Ascent?
Just wondering.

That would be a nightmare! I did wonder if it might happen but luckily it didn't.

How long did it take for your points to show up in the linked account after you've linked the cards? I called them a week ago to link the cards and while that worked instantly, I'm still waiting for my points from my explorer to show up in the ascent program...

Do you mean gateway rewards or something else? Ascent points are known as Ascent Membership Rewards, or Ascent MR...

Question for people who are using the Edge/Explorer combo, is it possible to spend the two Amex Travel Credits ($400 and $200 from each card) at the same time on the the one thing?
For example if I'm spending $1000 on a hotel can I use both credits to pay $600 or will I need to make two separate purchases?

Separate only as far as I am aware.
