amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Yes the graphics went to 50k on pub site last week,

However it ended on 14 Jan in my referral link, looks like they put different date on friend referrals.

Maybe this has to do something when somebody invites others?

I had a friend approved on 14th Jan while the T&C said "by 14th Jan" so we'll see.

Saved everything from that page just in case he he

Has anyone been successful in transferring their MR points to Ascent points recently?

I'm planning on getting a platinum edge card soon, using it for a month or so then trying to get all my MR points transferred to Ascent points.

FIL reported doing this successfully about 2 weeks ago.

Linking is still being done for anyone with Plat Edge or Charge. We just had MrsMac’s Explorer linked to Plat Charge, done by OS call centre on the first call. Last time we linked it took around 4 calls. Points haven’t appeared yet but operator said they will be there in 1-2 days. Now to run the balance up in the next 8 weeks

doubling of ascent premium once linked was offered?

doubling of ascent premium once linked was offered?

We held Plat Charge before deval was announced and the notification letter stated balance would be doubled. I’m assuming this applies to all ascent premium points, whether earned or rolled in from Gateway.

Does anyone think there’s a chance this card or other Amex reward cards could see new customer point bonus increases as part of the amexpoint devaluation to entice new customers? Considering applying but thinking of waiting and seeing what happens after the points deval.

The devaluation is on the transfer rate so unless welcome bonuses are doubled as well, they’ll be hit just as hard.

I agree, unlikely. Apply now to get the current system but will need to transfer them out by 14 April. Will put Amex on parity with the Banks. Ie 100k bank points are significantly less than 100K FF points but looks more ‘impressive’.

I think the bank comparison is one of the drivers of the redemption rate change (rather than just halving the earn)
On a comparison site, a 100K bonus on say an ANZ Black could have looked more enticing than 50K (old)MR

Moving forward, 100k Qantas or Velocity will be more attractive than 100k Amex MR points. I know which ones I will be applying/churning. Unless Amex offers like above 150k MR signup bonus, which is at least 75k Krisflyer miles.

My thoughts exactly. i wanted to apply but i dont want to be forced to move them to either KF or Velocity straight away as i prefer the flexibility.

How long do you think it would take once hitting the spend requirement to get the 100k points to ensure there's time to transfer before the deval?

In my experience, bonus points hit once you reach minimum spend and the transactions post, so 1-2 business days after hitting minimum spend.

Rang weekday evening at 8pm. No problems to link accounts. Points arrived lunchtime next day - All done on the 1st call

due to certain circumstances and events, partially my fault,

my account in points is now 80,000 in negative

id rather zero it sooner then later to keep on continue to earn points

however my usage is pretty small now due to amex changes recently

what are my options? ive even thought about closing the account as well

I made the same mistake and ended up with a huge negative balance. I just closed the account. No mention of it.
