amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

The BMW Gold card has MR Gateway so maybe your Explorer card is linked to your old MR Gateway account and therefore no bonus points for existing MR account. Check your MR account number with your old BMW Gold statement to see whether it's the same.
You are right. I just get my first statement, found out the same MR award number on the statement.
You can't see how disappointed I am.......:(:(:(:(

Got my card recently. This is my first AmEx issued card and I'm wondering if I should get a supplementary card. If so, which one?

Supplementary cards are cards on the same account you already hold, of the same card type to give to family/friends/employees. Their charges are charged to your account and you get the points.

Yeah, I know how it works. I'm just wondering which one to get. Wasn't there one that comes with a Virgin flight every year? Can't seem to find it

What jackthomas is meaning is that if you've got the Explorer card, you can only get a Explorer supplementary card.

The Amex Platinum Edge comes with a free VA flight each year, but you can't get the Explorer card as a primary card and the Platinum Edge as a supplementary card.

Yeah - I am still thinking of getting an unlinked Gateway account to see if I can get the 100K Gateway Membership points. Hoping that someone else in the community would have done it before to tell us what the results were. I think if you do go ahead - maybe transfer your points from your Acscent account to an airline frequent flyer program first - just in case Amex stuff up with your membership reward programs and deduct what is already in your account.

Any further thoughts/news on this?

For those who created a separate login, did you achieve this by listing a different email address on this credit card application? I listed the same email address as my other cards used, and so I don't recall being asked to create an login, it just automatically merged with my existing one

Same question. Did those people use a different email address?

Both myself and my partner previously had Velocity Platinum AMEX's which we closed back in Jan. She applied for the Explorer card a few weeks back and just received the 100,000 bonus points today after hitting the minimum spend over the weekend. She was registered with her previous email address and AMEX login.

Consequently I've just applied for the card using the the same email address as previously used and now expect to get the bonus points also - although do I accept it possibly might not happen. Still fingers crossed!

Hi everyone - probably to early for anyone to have any experience on my question, but throwing it out there in case.....

Have any exisiting explorer cardholders applied for the edge and received the sign on bonus for the edge ???
I know there have been wide reported problems with going from ascent > gateway and subsequently not receiving sign on bonus; however going the other way and 'upgrading' the program, I wonder if that would help and make you eligible for the sign on bonus with the edge? Would referring someone also help?

There is some madness to my enquiry!

I read on the Ozbargain thread last night that someone did Unlink to get a separate Gateway account - spent above the threshold required - but didn't get any bonus points.
So from this information - it is not certain if you will get the points or not.

Here's my experience:

1) Have both Plat Charge and Velocity Credit Card. Both cards were under the same online account.
2) Cancelled Velociy credit card.
3) A week late, applied for Explorer and got approved.
4) Received card and registered a different online account.
5) Spent >7k on the Explorer in two days
6) Points for transactions as well as bonus points were never credited into my account but noticed a manually adjusted amount for some of my transactions but still missing a lot of other transactions.
7) Contacted Amex. Told I do not qualify for bonus Gateway points since I had a velocity but will investigate missing transacitons.
8) Manually credited with missing transactions points.
9) Re-spent over 1.5K.
10) Got bonus Gateway points :D

There are some glitches in their system for sure.

Now deciding if I should link it to Ascent.

Please keep us posted. If can get the Gateway bonus to transfer to FF points then link to Ascent will be the best result.

Hadnt seen this anywhere publicly (nor mentioned on here) but apparently there is an offer for 5,000 bonus points for signing up a supplementary card holder this month.

Only found out because I was doing it anyway so a happy little 5k bonus.

Just for the explorer card? I can recall getting 3k points a while back for getting a plat edge supp card.
Aaaargh! if only I could sign up the cat as a supp card holder... ;'(

Where'd you find this? When I click on supplementary card when logged into Amex there's no such 5k bonus.
