amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Still holding a Qantas American Express Premium Gold Card. Wanting to apply for this card.

Not sure if I'll get the bonus sign on points given the 18 month exclusion period indicated in their terms.

Should I cancel the Qantas American Express Premium Gold Card first and then apply or should I just apply for this card as well?

Reports of people getting the bonus points whilst still holding a Qantas American Express Premium Gold Card card or getting the points after cancelling this card and immediately applying for another card appreciated.

Additionally if I read the terms of the offer correctly is my thinking on the following correct?

I apply for this card. Don't get the bonus points because of the 18 month exclusion period. So I cop the $395 fee. But I would still get this ' $400 travel credit' even if I didn't happen to score the 100,000+ introductory points?

If so the risk may be worth it - especially given my fee is nearly due on the Qantas American Express Premium Gold Card.

I don't think it will make any difference to cancel or not. You will still get $400 travel credit. I decided to apply for this card knowing the risk but thought it was still a good deal without bonus points. I was looking for another Amex card to take statement credit offers anyway. Ended up with bonus points and almost $1000 statement credits after 3 months plus used travel credit for Easter flights. Very happy with this card.

I held a Velocity Amex when I applied and got bonus points + credit. Logic from what I have seen is that you should be Ok if you don't hold another card which earns 'gateway' points or get linked to an ascent account when activated. Don't forget the exrta 10,000 points via referrals thread.

So I received and activated my Plat edge card - currently have an explorer as well.
Under my points profile I can see gateway and ascent , and can click between them two. Does that mean it isn't linked? When is it linked does that mean I only see ascent and not gateway?
I only just activated my plat edge card - should I wait a day or so and see if it automatically links?
cheers

I think that means the cards aren't linked.

So I'm about to apply for this card shortly.

Does someone who hasn't had a random lucky referral want to post up their link? I'll use it and send some points your way.

One quick question, which has probably been answered - so I'll try and trawl the thread later this weekend.

If I have a credit card that is associated with the Gateway program, but I have directly linked it to Qantas (e.g. AMEX Gold CA) - am I likely to still receive the sign on bonus? Basically, the card sits in the gateway program, but I haven't linked it to the program.

Re your question, I don't know the answer however I previously had an AMEX Velocity Plat which I cancelled recently to get this card. All bonus points have been credited. Worth giving it a go.

Cheers

If you had a Gateway program created in the last 18 months then unfortunately you are unlikely to receive the bonus. To get the bonus, you must have a newly created Gateway program or not have one in the last 18 months.

Doesn't sound like he has had a gateway card yet if he's only had a direct Qantas card. Should get the points with no issue.

Completed application using a referral link. At no stage of the application did it ask me if I already had an AMEX account.

I have removed your referral link, this isn't the referral section.

Right so, got the card today and activated it. I do not see any gateway account when I see my points in 'Points History'. I only see Ascent Premium, as I have a Platinum charge card.
I presume this is expected, right?

Ring them up, ask them to link the Explorer card to a Gateway account? Am i right?
Spend the $1500 and wait for the bonus points to arrive, then ring them up and join the accounts again under ascent premium.

Hmm
In my explorer gateway account when I do redeem points, it seems like I can 'buy' an ascent annual pass for 10,800 points. I wonder if this is worth trying if they won't link my accounts?

Dang it, referred. Hopefully just an income verification...

Completed application using a referral link. At no stage of the application did it ask me if I already had an AMEX account.

Received email overnight saying my application has been approved and the cards are on their way.

No request for payslips or confirmation of annual income was ever made.

Other banks could learn a lot from the way AMEX operates.

Got my accounts linked tonight :) gentleman did it over the phone while I was on hold . Just waiting for the gateway points to land into my ascent account . He said he needed manager approval for that - fingers crossed manager doesn't look and reverse the changes !

Hi guys, I just got my card today, a week prior to registration, I cancelled my previous amex with had gateway points. The new card came, linked to my old account with existing gateway points. Has anyone experienced this scenario?

Not sure what you mean by 'I just got my card today, a week prior to registration,'
