amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

I suspected it wouldn't work when it was suggested earlier.

Sorry to hear of your problems Betty. AMEX are usually very good with customer service so hopefully all will be sorted for you very quickly.

My experience is they're great with simple things, but when it's complicated they can be painful. Spent a month trying to get a points gift actioned, finally kicked up enough of a stink and was transferred to an Australian-based 'Manager' who put it through the same day for me.

I'd suggest you do apply by calling. I'm not advocating false names and I didn't apply using false names.

I acted on the advice of bbqwer who said not to call them, but instead to apply online for additional Explorer cards using the link for Platinum Edge cards. THIS HAS NOT WORKED! And it's now seen my Explorer account suspended. DO NOT FOLLOW THE ADVICE!
im so sorry to hear that, I was going to apply online but didnt as I was goign to try my luck in getting the bonus points

hope you get it sorted out soon
luck i didnt , I am unsure what to do now ;(

also, with generating referallinks, I did it on my phone and the link they gave me is like amex.com.au/username?CPID100001010

while the ones posted on here seem to be amex.com.au/username

as a test I did both and both seemed to take me to the same page, I even changed a few letters to see if it was generic and yes, it also went to the same page,

can someone tell me how to generate these links properly

For once my incompetence paid off - I actually did try that method to get a supp card for the explorer, but all I managed to get was a supp card for the plat edge..in my name ..worked out well in the end

so are you supposed/allowed/recommend to apply for supp cards under variations of your own names or real other people????

You should only use real names, of real people. To do otherwise is fraught with the risk of having your cards cancelled sooner or later.

ive also read that some people are being asked for ID for supp cards

Despite what some claim Amex do check. They do not always check, but they do check. Sometimes they check at time of application and sometimes they check after the fact. I have been using Amex Supp cards for a decade and a number of these have been spot-checked.

So like many things in the life of the Points Hunter, consider the risk and your circumstances. Are you ok to risk your Amexes being cancelled?

For my circumstances Amex has been extremely lucrative and I use one Amex as a seven figure Points Warehouse. So I am not going to put that at risk. I only ever use real people, real names and real addresses. After all in your application for Supps they either have your application in writing, or as a voice recording. So if they do check and the information you have certified to be as true and correct is in fact not, it will be a slap over the knuckles at best, and cancelled at the other extreme.

A warning for others. I tried this. Applied for supplementary cards in legitimate names. Caused huge problems that I'm still trying to get AMEX to fix. I've spend hours on the phone so far with this problem. 10 days later I still don't have my supplementary cards. AMEX said their system went into melt down when I applied for platinum edge cards from my explorer account.

I don't recommend you do this. Just call them to get your supplementary cards.

I applied for supplementary card online via the edge on an explorer account - card turned up 4 days later. no issues in my case?

Quick question from a rookie, can you utilise the AMEX points for say a Emirates rewards flight in conjunction with Qantas points (via one world)? I understand they cannot be transferred to Qantas points, but can they be used through one of the 8 supported airlines and qantas points used via oneworld to purchase the one reward seat/s?

I have applied regardless via one of the referrals.

You'll have to look into the specific airline partners as to what airline their awards allow you to redeem on.
Eg on Emirates, you can redeem for QF, similar for SQ on star alliance partners and MH on oneworld partners.
Availability may be an issue for partners/ alliance given they would prioritise their own FF member but not too sure on that.

Received a letter from Amex today...

...telling me that the card is on its way!

Lame! And what a waste of a letter...

Things for me were going well, but not so much recently.

I have an Edge card.
Applied for this explorer card, it came linked.
Called and got the rewards accounts unlinked.
Spent the required $1,500.00
The bonus 110K bonus points were awarded.
A couple of referrals were also credited to my gateway account.
I called 3-4 times to get the membership rewards accounts linked and points moved over, all representatives said no.
24 hours later, I find the gateway account deleted.
Call up again, the representative mentions that there are notes to have the accounts linked and points moved.
2-3 days later, email received, saying congrats accounts linked but we cannot give you any of the points accumulated because only for new members.
Call up again, asking why points lost, and why these processes progressed without any customer agreement.
Goto wait another 2-3 days ...
So bonus, referrals and points awarded for purchases all no longer appearing for my explorer card for the last 2-3 weeks.

:(

welcome aboard Tuffie. You lucked out there, fingers crossed it will be sorted out in your favour, please keep us updated

So it would seem they have caught on (hopefully isolated) and are clawing back points.

- The options are join up for the card and keep it linked and forgo the points to earn 2 points per $
- Unlink cards get the 100000 points (Gateway points) keep card unlinked and hope they don't still remove the points?

It also shows you have to jump in early on these things.

I think it is too early to write it off.

Tuffie mentioned this happened 2-3 weeks ago and I think others have been successful in this time.

I've had the account for 2-3 weeks but the deletion of account(gateway) and linking is only in the last week, the re-link occurred yesterday.

What's even more annoying is that it's not just the bonus points ... there's still a notable chunk from referrals and spending that went missing.

Newbie here. And I'm still learning. But all the above talk about accounts deleted and points missing has me worried.

Are the points being not credited because they already are an existing amex customer? I thought having a gateway and separate Explorer is fine. Or is happening only when you have them merged?

I currently have an Explorer only and was in the process of doing the whole edge thing as well. And now getting worreid

Sorry, I miss understood this bit:
