  2. Earn 2 Membership Rewards Points per $1 on eligible purchases, uncapped, which you can transfer to 13 different airline & hotel programs
  3. $400 annual travel credit fully offsets the $395 annual fee

amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

With the current transfer rates 50,000 points is nowhere near enough to get me interested in this card.

There's often bonuses or referrals for 100k points - would recommend keeping an eye out for those. The exception to that would be if you know you're not going to go after another AMEX card for 18 months, and you can use the travel credit + 2 lounge passes in the first year easily. At that point, you've pretty much made back the annual fee, so its a 'free' 50k points (yes, not free ofc but you get my point)

Even though they rejected my application, likely due to churning, I'm still seeing the 70k personalized offer.
I'll probably try again in 90 days as suggested in the AMEX rejection thread - I'd like to keep this card, mostly due to the annual travel credit and lounge access..

Referral offer looks to have increased to 30,000 for the card holder and 100,000 for the applicant. I think I'll bite at that!

That’s a cracking deal. I see the Business variant of the Qantas card is offering 170k!

For referral does anyone know if someone had previously held the David Jones Amex card will be eligible or will they have to wait 18 months? T&C states “You cannot refer a friend who already has one of our Cards or has held one in the last 18 months.” But in case anyone knows since this was a weird situation. I’ve got a friend that is interested but they had the amex DJ card which is now a latitude card.

DJ card was always an anomaly anyway. You could get the bonus for that if you held another Amex. So whilst not certain, I’d say it’s definitely worth a crack.

I had a few larger expenses. I wanted to get a new credit card for. I had a few tabs on credit cards open including the tab for this card and when I refreshed the site it came up with "personalised offer 110,000 points, for sign up". Later that week I was able to replicate the same offer by doing the technique.

I applied and they called me to confirm that I had been approved. I asked about instant digital access which they told me they could not do. I expressed my dismay then asked and spoke to a service representative about getting my new card Express posted. They said they would expedite it and the following morning it was in my post box having been sent by express registered post.

I would recommend others looking into this card do the same!

I thought I would chip in with my recent experience, I have stayed away from amex for a while due to points devaluations and lack of competition sign up offers. The last amex I had was pre COVID

I recently applied for a velocity platinum card.
Annual fee $440

Benefits
- 100k velocity points after $3k spend in the first 3 months (I also received 30k as the referrer)
- one return trip yearly
- access to virgin domestic lounge EVERYTIME flying virgin Australia
- amex offers and discounts per the amex app
- higher points earn rates, directly to velocity, not MR. 2.25 velocity points on virgin Australia, 1.25 points per $1 spent at non govt and 0.5 points otherwise.

In terms of service, amex now provide notifications of when the card has been issued and sent, to give you an indication of when to expect receiving the card. This wasn't the case when I previously had an amex card

Not sure if I can post my referral link, please contact me and I'll be very grateful if you do so :)

Reach out if you have any questions too

How did you get the 30k and the 100k?

Not Explorer specific, but has anyone else had any issues with getting re-approved by Amex post Covid? Three friends, my OH & I have all been hit with declines at various points over the last couple of years. I finally got back on the Amex AU bandwagon a couple of weeks ago (QF Ultimate), but the rest still being declined - decent salaries, no debt (other than regular use of CCs) owned homes (outright) - what exactly do Amex want?!

Ah, thanks! I see one of the aforementioned friends has already found that thread haha. Such an untidy approach, no logic it seems, as they don't even seem to do searches (in my case anyway). Anyway that's a bit OT, I'll read that thread properly, thanks for replying though!
