Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows about the four digit code next to the card holder's name?

What does it represent or is there any use of it?

Thanks in advance.

Yes this is an important number. You will occasionally be asked to fill it in on internet sites to prove you are in possession of the actual card.

Other credit cards have a three digit number on the reverse that does the same thing.

As always make sure it is a genuine internet site.

Nono... Not that one...It seems to appear on the platinum charge card only

The digits are located exactly on the right of the name... (Where normally the AC is [Additional Card])

However, this code is not present on my friend's HK plat charge....

Hi all,

Well on my Plat charge and credit card there is no number next to my name.

I have a 4 digit number embossed to the right of my name. No idea what it's for.

I have:

  • Card number
  • Valid thru
  • Member since
  • My name
  • My company

I was so curious about it and even called the platinum line... The operator was so rude and said "You don't need to know that number, it's irrelevant."

If it is so irrelevant, then why put it on the card?

PS: Amex's advertisement says that "we see you as a person"... In this circumstance, I see it as number, I am treated as a four digit number.

Is it on your card?

Yes, it's on my card. I didn't even know it was there until yesterday.
My friend of mine asked me what the number is for...... and of course, i don't know....

Why don't I have this number?

ejb

every Amex card has one... its the security number for use by merchants to prove that the card is present/in the hands of the card holder at time of transaction

You are referring to the CVV number, it's been pointed out that is not the number being referred to by the OP.

Just to support the story. Mine is also on the charge card only and I'm unable to relate it to anything what so ever.

Apologies I see that post now - perhaps it is an issue with the way the cardmember name is entered into the system ie numbers have been entered after the name for some reason? It's not usual for a number to be appearing here I believe.

Anecdotal evidence is that it is on the Platinum Charge cards of ALL people who have commented on this thread.

Would that be the total number of platinum cards issued?

But then again, the number would be bigger I assume....

Hi

according to amex it is "CID is a 4-digit, non-embossed number printed above your Card account number on the front of your Card. We require this number as an additional security precaution" I think CID is Card Identification Number
I was using my card to pay for something online recently & it kept asking for that number as well - I kept trying to use the last 4 digits in the number on the signature panel - called amex & that's what they told me. They said it's often required if the merchant can't see the card.

cheers
