Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

I absolutely played the game wrong!

Rang to cancel (first time ever, had held this card since ..... well at least 2015, probably before that) my explorer. Mentioned I was applying for a home loan so looking to reduce credit limits. They very quickly said well we don't want to get in the way of that, and processed the cancellation.

😆 Oh well!

Groundhog year! 200k retention, 4 years in a row. I thought my time was up, as "no we can't offer retentions in Australia anymore", then got off-shored and "yeah, no problem, will 200k be ok to keep the card?" The gift that keeps on giving.

Nice! Which card? You should've recorded the conversation and share with us :)

Usually instant, or within 24 hours at the longest.

For QF cards you then need to wait until your next monthly sweep to QFF for them to be usable.
alright. I called this evening and was told it can take a max of 72hours. Will report back on my experience once/if the points hit my account.

I just tried my luck again (annual fee due in ~1 week), was told there was no retention offers as I was given 60k MR points last year. Lady seemed a little rude, don't know if it's worth trying again or AMEX is just getting stingier with their retention offers...

Try again outside business hours, the computer in Manila may say YES

Points came through this morning. But now they cancel your card first and then reinstate it which is different from few years ago. At least they are giving retention bonuses again as they had abandoned it for 2-3yrs from memory.

Good point. I called after 6pm AEST and the call went to Manila.

Does this mean that the Travel Credit on the Reserve card will no longer exist once they cancel and reinstate the card?

YMMV but I would not enter the cancellation two-step without already having cashed in your travel credit
Its potentially worse than that though as you could lose it forever as TC not offered on new Reserve applications

Did you try again?
In the rewards activity statement the points credit description is - "Once Only Valued Customer Loyalty Bonus".
Anyone else have had luck in getting back to back retention bonus?

I had this once in 2020 but no luck when I tried to ask retention bonus in 2021.

Yes, if you read this thread there are some who have reported back to back retention offers (I'm not one of them though).
