Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Little too nervous to go through it all the way since I need to use this card for some larger payments soon and I've seen posts where people just got cancelled, but yeah the only way you'll get a retention offer is if you go through the cancellation process. Called up the regular service line and they basically say 'we can't offer it under australian law' but they did say the cancellations team would be able to check if you have a retention offer. So go straight to the cancellations team if you want it.

NZ Platinum Edge. $2k spend per month. Fee due in Dec. Spoke to OZ based agent - no retention bonus available for me ☹️.

  • Asked to cancel via live chat in the app. They directed to cancellation team.
  • Not offered anything, I said yes to confirm to cancellation.
  • Afterwards they asked 'why did you cancel'.
  • I Said 'other banks are offering 110k bonus points. If you had offered a bonus I might have stayed'.
  • They came back with a 15k offer to reinstate the card.
  • I asked if they could offer more, they said no so I said okay then, leave cancelled.
Low spend and very low limit, so wasn't expecting anything substantial, but don't have an immediate use for the $450 QF credit so wasn't keen on the annual fee. Hope this helps someone else with the 'dance'

Have had the Explorer card since Nov 18. Spend $6-8k/month. Annual fee due next week. Called yesterday at 4pm and said I wanted to cancel cause the annual fee is too expensive (I really dislike AMEX travel). Was suggested I could swap to a different card. Said no thanks and listened to the cancellation t&cs. Rep came back and offered 80k points (“because it’s equivalent to the $400 annual fee”) which I accepted. Also was offered to convert the points into a $400 statement credit. I said I’d think about it and call back- no way I’m doing that.

I'm also similar spend/time period.

First 2 years I was able to get 20 or 40k (pre deval) points when mentioning cancel.

Last 3 , I've tried 5 times and failed.

Maybe, they're changing their tune, my fee is due in 2 months, but I've heard others getting the cancellation points over recent years though

As a further point of reference
- I called the 1800 number on my card, not the 1300 number the app mentions (not sure if they’re different in some way)
- that’s the first time in 4 years I’ve tried my luck getting a retention bonus
- I’d transferred out all my MR points completely expecting to close the account

Called after 6PM. Got told that my business platinum can't be dealt with after 6PM because the business team is closed. The guy couldn't answer any of my questions regarding closing the account. Said he couldn't see a retention offer on his end either. He said he could close it. But couldn't do anything else. He wasn't sure, or wasn't willing to answer, what happens after I close the card.

Cool so here's my additional data point
- called in July this year, got 70k points
- called just now coz well, annual fee
- the first CS staff couldn't do much, forwarded me to cancellations
- Cancellations were smart this time, reminded me of the international dining offer (is good actually coz I can use it 2x for SG and AUS) - and also, reminded me that they gave me 70k points in July hahaha
- damnit, so thanked the man, hung up - well played cancellations, well played!

Called today as the annual fee has been charged during the week. Used the 1800 number on the back and followed the prompts to get directly through the the cancellations team.

Provided some reasons that the card wasn’t meeting my expectations (all true statements based on my experience) and was offered 50,000 points to retain the card. Rep also tried to sell me on the travel voucher and global dining offers. Pleasant and professional conversation though.

Less that I had hoped based on my usage but better than nothing!

I had a similar approach. Instead was offered a different solution. Being under extra pressure from being mandated out of work. It was a godsend. I was genuinely ditching my card.

This was for the platinum charge card.
