Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Ah I see, I was approaching it from the other angle. I have a decent USD spend so I get dinged the conversion fee but seems like it *could* be worth paying from my perspective for the points... I'll have to run the numbers again. Good to know about the better rate with the transfers though.
If you have USD then the AU plat conversion rate is rubbish and negate any gains, but worth a shot

Any plat charge holder managed to negotiate for points upon renewal after 12 months of the last renewal with points given at that time.

Slightly off topic, about to cancel my soletrader ABN and thinking to notify Amex and cancel the business card (I think I have to?) In such cases, do they offer bonus points for migrating to a personal card?

I just tried to cancel Qantas Ultimate card I've had for last year (2 weeks before renewal). It really is a pain you can only use the flight credit on QF but....I was offered 40,000 QF points to stay.

Of course, I said yes (they wouldn't meet me at 50K lol)

I was seriously wanting to cancel the card and was not playing the points offer game. I love how they go through the entire process and the offer comes at the last possible moment before you pull the trigger.

Explorer Card - don't use it at all now for last 3 months as Mrs has a charge now.
Due to roll over in Dec.
Member since 2016
160k points to keep it which I took.
edit: was putting through ~60k/month for work. But nothing in last 3 months
edit: my 1st time ever 'cancelling' the card
Did you call up to achieve this? I’ve got an explorer so might give it a shot!

Explorer Card - Hardly being used as Wife is a supplementary on Platinum. Rung today, cancelled and reinstated for 80K points. Was previously putting through around 10-15k pm on the explorer, now in the few hundreds.

Called today to cancel my Explorer card as I recently got approved for the Platinum. Got put through to the cancellation team who cancelled and offered to reinstate for 80k points to "help with the annual fee".

Previously putting through ~7k a month but next to nothing now that everything is on the Platinum. Guess I will keep the Explorer Card for another year...

Hi All,
I called to cancel the card, and told no retention can be offered from Amex. Asked about if I cancel the card and see if retention offer would pop then decide to reinstate the card, and was told once card is cancel its permanently cancel.
Seems to be different story depends on who you talk to?

Yeah probably just try a different agent at a different time. Mine virtually walked me thru the whole dance.

Seem like an agent having a bad day at work, call back later.

Hi all
Called the number of the back of my Platinum Charge, asked if there was anything they could do in terms of annual fee or bonus points and was told no. Asked to cancel then, agent did the hard sell, I asked if they could offer anything more and was given 100,000.
To be honest, it was worth the hassle - I now have the choice of keeping the points or reducing my annual fee by $500 with those points.
Spend was about $100k over the 12 months…. gulp better cut back this year.

Amex Business Qantas Charge Card - Annual Fee $450, minimal benefits. (no spend over the last 3 months) so called to cancel today.

Without prompting was offered, and accepted, 80K QFF.

Yes. I did use the Dell discounts (2x$100) and the 2 lounge passes so that was something. They would need to pay me to use the Australian subscription :)
Good to know, thanks.
When I signed up, it included a $450 travel credit which is now not on offer.
I'll see what I can get when my annual fee is due.

Called today to cancel my Qantas Ultimate Card, and was offered nothing. Annual fee due in July. Closed the card, as without any bonus I'd rather reset the 18 months.
