Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

P2 cancelled charge card last night. AF was due and I double dipped on both the domestic and international restaurant credits. Offered to change to another card, but I was going to cancel anyway even if they did offer points (I own the charge anyway)

$20k spent for 12 months

Amex Qantas Ultimate. Approx. 100K annual spend.

Annual fee just deducted.

Called and asked to be put through to the cancellations team. Phone agent (Aussie call centre) stated "I am the cancellation team".

Agent asked why I was cancelling the card and I said I wanted to take advantage of another product's sign up bonus. Agent said he understood and after repeating my current card features he asked did I want to go ahead.
I asked him if he could remain on the call after cancellation and then he read through the script and I agreed.

He then said (without prompting) that he couldn't offer anything other than a card downgrade. I then asked him to check if there was a retention offer on the computer for my card. The agent stated that they no longer offer ANY retention bonuses on ANY of their Australian products.

As I no longer work enough to apply for high end cards and value the points generated by this card I asked him to reinstate the card on the same call.

Should I give it another shot outside Australian business hours?

I suspect what they are saying is true, all of the recent successes seem to have been for charge cards, whereas all the recent failures have been for CCs and the messaging has been consistent.

Has anyone had any success asking for a sign on bonus for a different card, when they've already got one?
If by "different card" you mean the DJs one, then ISTR some people having success. Not sure if that's still the case though. Otherwise only a glitch in the matrix would allow the 18 month rule to be penetrated.

One week to renewal, called twice: a few days ago and recently.

First time offshore, asked to transfer to cancellations team. She said she could cancel straight away, very direct, no attempt at retaining or explaining benefits. No retention offer either. Asked if I could reinstate if I changed mind later (within 30 days, as I've read in this thread). She said no, will need to do new application. Got cold feet and decided to HUCA.

Second attempt got onshore. Complained about erosion of benefits before moving towards requesting xfer to cancellations/retentions. Transferred to offshore. Again, no retention but decided to go through it this time to see if I'd get the reinstate offer. No reinstate offer.

Amex plat, $220k YTD spend, one year customer

cough :(
First year renewal just deducted for me,

Was hoping to get 30k+ to offset the burn of the annual fee.. a little less confident after these.

Not seeing the value any more... SQ enhancement, dining bonus ending 2024, awful service from Amex travel.
Will need at least 150,000 to 200,000 MR to stay. I've done the sums and that is where the cost:benefit ratio works for me. Anything less and I am gone.
I won't need to go through to retentions etc. It will be a straight cancellation if they don't want to keep my business.

Best of luck to you @Duffa

Honestly, based on recent experiences I suspect you are in for a short phone call with them but be thrilled to hear otherwise as I'm quite disillusioned too but left it too long to get anything out of them.

The dining bonus is ending this year?

Which card are you switching to?

Which card are you switching to?
Dunno. They are all a bit coughpy now with poor transfer rates. Probably look for highest sign on bonus and one that offers insurance if you spend $500 on travel expenses rather than buy the flight tickets.
