Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Hi Guys,

I m wondering if anyone has retention team's direct contact number.
I have a charge card and velocity platinum card, and only been offered 8k on each card, thats right 8k only....
Any suggestion is appreciated, thanks.

I think there's an option on the IVR now if you wish to cancel your card that should connect to the Save-A-Card team

I would be dumping the restaurants that don't accept Amex rather than dumping Amex. If a business doesn't accept Amex they won't have me as a customer.
There is a cafe near where I live that currently takes AMEX but is soon not too, citing high fees and delayed receipt of funds. My own thinking is that his AMEX receipts must be significant enough in the first place to notice, and that by cancelling AMEX, he will be putting a chunk of his turnover at risk. How much I'm not sure.

Just cancelled my plat edge. Was offered 15k to stay, but with the changeover of the free flights to a $200 credit, that's just not enough to keep the card. So goodbye plat edge!

that is very interesting, which card are you using for supermarket spend?

Currently using the NAB visa platinum as their signup offer was rather enticing at the time. I already have a free flight attached to my ANZ travel rewards so losing the AMEX isn't a big deal.

you're not putting through enough to make the 3pt per $ worth while? because 15k to me is worth $300, or if it was at 1c per dollar then its $150. So the annual fee being $195, for me its a no brainer to keep it when offered 15k pts. Unless you are valuing MR pts at 0.5cents per dollar then $75 + $200 travel credit.. even then I think it would be worthwhile.

Not really. We don't actually shop from supermarkets much with most of our buys from Costco (who don't accept Amex anymore) and farmers markets. I really only use Krisflyer but as it is, finding it hard to book reward flights as waitlisting kills my nerves. I wanted to redeem qantas miles instead with my existing lot of points but they don't have that partnership anymore.

And when flights from Adelaide are expensive to start with, $200 really doesn't get you very far. At best it's 1.5 of a Virgin flight. Sometimes, it's not even a one way leg depending on the times / dates.

Just cancelled the Edge card. was offered 15K VA points to keep it.
OR, take the Velocity Platinum card for a reduction pa from $375 to $275 pa for lifetime. I said but I want to come back in 18 months for a '100K' sign on bonus. She said that as I still hold, and if I keep the VA Escape card (fee free pays 1:1 VA), I wouldn't qualify for a sign on bonus. Oh well that's life, and I'll risk the wait.

I reckon I'd be cancelling my VA escape card in your situation. If the AMEX T&C's stay the same as they are now, in 18 months time you'd be ineligible for any AMEX signon bonus (excluding the DJ's card range). Of course these things always depend on individual circumstances.

The Edge is good for grocery shopping, but I bought so little it was a waste. Free 1:1 Escape card is probably enough for the little I put on it. Most of my spend goes on the BankWest World card. The cc changes coming will be interesting to see in 18 months.

Indeed, makes perfect sense - everyone's spend is different and you are quite right 18 months is a very long time in the world of CC's with all the recent changes.

Offered and accepted 15k to keep my Platinum Edge. Helps somewhat offset the change from the flight to travel credit. Overall the card is simply too good for on going points earn to cancel. Annual fee had just been charged when I called.

Accepted 36000 points to keep platinum edge for another year. More than covers the $149 fee. Did get 23000 points about 6 months ago for not cancelling.

For those calling to cancel and getting bonus points, do you hold multiple amex cards/products? Would I have any luck getting points if I call to cancel my edge but at the same time still have my platinum?

I've done that before and had no problems at all, so I imagine it should work for you too.

Good luck!

I have the plat charge, edge and explorer. Annual fee for the plat charge is due in July and fee for the edge in August. Called first to cancel the charge and was offered 23000 which I accepted. Called a little later on to cancel the edge and was once again offered 23000, again accepted. A couple of days later I checked and 69000 MR points had landed in my account. WINNING!
