Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Call via the Plat Charge number, ask to have you explorer card linked to the same MR as the rest of your cards as it’s too hard to manage. I did it the day I got my explorer.

There are other threads on this as well, it’s how I learned to do it.

Thanks for the advice, it has been done.

Yeah get them linked. Might take a few phone calls as some might say not possible. Say goodbye and try calling again

and only took one call.

Seems some still are getting offers. one of my clients just called to ask if they should accept 100k offer after calling to cancel the plat charge card.I said yes take it and run.they only have a gold biz card as second card.

its been a while since th 5k bonuses for supplaimentry has anyone heard any offers recently?

Two data points to add:

Called re: my plat charge and was offered 1K points to keep it which I told them was disappointing, given I'd had some issues. Got put on hold and then offered 3K points. Told them I'd think about it, called back a few days later and after some back and forth the guy said the best they could do was 5K. Told them I was still pretty disappointed but took them as I wasn't really too serious about cancelling my card. Probably $2K spend per month...

My wife called to cancel her plat charge and was flat out refused any points - offered a gold card instead. Rejected and cancelled.

Looks like they’re getting tougher on the retention points. I’ve cut down my spend on the Platinun Charge to dining only as I put everything through Explorer. I keep my Platinum due to the other perks and points pooling. Worth it for me.

Called to cancel the Exp Linked Edge, was offered 5k for each, total is 10k. I asked more, but refused and 10k is the max he can offer. I took the offer and the points were added to my account within 5 mins.

that sux,

I must have got lucky, I did mine in jan,
got offered 30k, on both cards , was surprised as one had high spend and one little spend

I’ve got an old Gold Charge card which I keep as my Edge is it’s free companion.

Each year since getting the Platinum Charge, Amex have waived the $130 Gold card fee on request or provided pointsas compensation. Last year, I received points. This year, my annual fee was credited back. Looks consistent with the general frying up of retention offers observed in recent times.

Thought this might be a helpful data point as to The likelihood of receiving points for retention.

No bonus points offered. Have the Plat Charge and Explorer. Called in Jan and April just before and after fee posted as I had different anniversary dates. No points offered. Have decent spend on the Explorer vs the Plat Charge but still zilch.

Spend 30k per month - sometimes Im late on payment but never been an issue in 8 years - got nothing.

Tried calling today to cancel Plat Charge Card, had it for a year, and average spent is around $8k. Got offered nothing as well.

QF Premium - cancelled, no ability to waive annual fee (had to ask anyway) and no bonus points offered to stay.

have any of you used the renewed travel credit and then cancelling the card? I think it may have been mentioned in this thread before or maybe on FT that they won't refund you your annual fee if you have used credit but any updated experiences is much appreciated

Called up today trying for some cheeky retention points. Never once mentioned I was going to cancel my Plat Charge only that I was wondering if I was due for any retention points since I have been lucky enough to get some in the past. The operator went through the speech about all the great benefits of it, she must have thought my intention was to cancel?? Anyway long story short I just chatted with her for a while about what the upcoming merger with SPG into the Marriott family would mean for our SPG transfer values. She couldn’t shed any light unfortunately and I then asked her once more about any potential retention points she may be able to have a supervisor approve. She went away for about half a minute then came back and offered 5k to keep the charge. Seeing as though I was not going to cancel anyway I took the points and ran! Paltry compared to previous retention’s but with the lack of results of late I thought I would just be happy at that. Better than nothing I suppose.

So after last months call to "see about cancelling" I called back today. Last month I called to ask when my annual fees would be due, how many days ahead would I need to empty my MR points balance, etc. Thinking this might flag a retention offer when I called back.

Nope. Agent initially offered me 1K points. I literally laughed, and she put me on hold, and said her supervisor is allowed to authorise an additional 4K more. I asked it it was per card, and she put me on hold again, and came back offering 15K all up to keep Plat Charge, Plet Reserve, and Explorer.

She claimed there is no retention team, and the computer automatically assigns retention bonuses. She said since I received 36K last year, that is probably why I didn't get one this year.

How dare they make me actually EARN my MR points! :)

How un-AUSTRALIAN (or is it un-AMERICAN)!

Actually spending money to earn points is so passe!
