Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Okay so I've had AMEX Platinum Edge for 20 months and I called them up tonight and said that I was moving all my credit card (debts) to my partner and was considering to shut this one down too. Asked them if there was any offer to "keep the card".
There was a kind of subtle laugh coming from the rep so I'm not sure if it was "normal", "routine" or "a running joke".
Anyway, he offered:

* Downgrade to Qantas No Annual Fee
* 10,000 MR points
* Cancel the card

From reading this thread itseems like a luck of the draw, I didn't want to push my luck so I took the 10,000 points.
He said it should arrive in 3 business days. Checked my Amex account 90 minutes later and found the 10,000 points already there under "Once Only Valued Customer Loyalty Bonus". I quickly redeemed it to my airline of choice.
Since my annual fee is still 3.5 months away, I could still cancel it! Not the best but better than 0!

Background:
20 months Platinum Edge (No other Amex before that)
Average spend was $1800/month

You guys who got 100k are amazing.

I have edge/exp
I think the first time they offered me 10k

The second Time i called I got offered 35k and 36k. Which I took in.a heartbeat.
Had my cards for 11 months

I always thought this 'reward' was always on the system and never changed. I should've tried again.
I have no. Idea to be honest.

Was very surprised to get a higher offer on the edge which had a $195 fee. My spend probably would have been similar

Jealous but it's free and it made me reach my return flight target. Can't complain. Would've been nice to get those extra points to get my partner over the line now.

Called to ask about retention points for keeping the Velocity Plat, offered fee free Escape card or to cancel it. FWIW annual spend is around $60-65k and have had the card for 3 years now

Is it still a pro rata refund on annual fee?

Think it’s time to cancel the platinum charge

Hold up until tomorrow to see the new benefits of this card. If they are not helpful, then call them to cancel. I called them last week and advised that the new benefits information will be published on their website on 17/07

how'd you find that out? just by speaking to someone in the phone? or is there some more reading i can do?

I talked to the rep last week and was advised the information. It should be published on their website tomorrow.

My Charge annual fee is due next Monday and the odds are it will get the flick. Interested to see what they have to offer....

The US Platinum Charge has no FX fees and a USD15/mth Uber credit. These would be nice addition to the AUS card.

No FX fee is the benefit I am expecting the most since CBA Amex and ANZ Travel Amex cards have been axed, there is no Amex card withoit the FX fee on the market.

Looks like you were spot on the money. Page for the Charge is updated now...and the price is $1,450 p.a.

Haven't gone into much detail but the biggest changes I see so far is the travel credit has increased to $450 from $300 (hopefully they don't remove the Reserve and this is still on top of the $400 from Reserve) and they brought back Accor Plus. Also a AFR digital subscription for those interested.

Phew!!, it’s time to cancel the card, nothing is useful, and the annual fee is increased.

yeah that looks pretty trash.

found out my anniversary date is tomorrow, so cleared out the points to SQ today and will give them a buzz tomorrow to see the retention offer, but most likely cancel the card.

interestingly the rep said if cancel within 30 days and no use of travel credits, then full refund of annual fee, otherwise SOL.

Colleague at the next desk just got 70,000 retention bonus for an Amex Platinum Charge that was coming up for renewal.

Member since 2013 and a pretty high spender.

any idea on what "pretty high" would be?

She just said "Maybe around 100k".

Someone else here has a theory that the retention bonus is a function of the maximum amount you can get approved using the "Check Spending Power" tool. She said that was over 50k for her.

I now mainly spend on my Explorer (well over $10k per month with family members as supps) but maintain the Platinum Charge (low spend maybe $1k/month) for other benefits.

Just for kicks asked if there was a retention bonus last night. Was told no but to ask closer to my renewal date and was suggested if my points balance was lower (I have been stockpiling MR points while running down others), I might have a better chance at a retention offer. Was planning to love a chunk of points to SPG before the 55% deval next month, may help me in this endeavor.

Thought I’d mention it in case anyone else has a similar profile and not been getting retention offers despite high patronage.
