Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Another data point is probably not needed at this point, but was offered no incentive to keep my Explorer card when I called yesterday. Annual fee was due today.

I was presented with the option to switch to an Essential card or a Platinum Rewards card ($80 fee). If I had a bigger balance of points I would have taken them up on the Platinum Rewards card in the hope that my Gateway points would be switched to Ascent, but as I didn’t I took the Essential. I’m likely to close even that before April but wanted some breathing room to decide.

What is the Platinum Rewards card with $80 fee?

I didn't realise there was another card with "Platinum" in the name other than Platinum Edge or the Platinum charge card!

Platinum Rewards is only available to existing cardholders. it is not advertised to general public.

Thanks! You're right, that doesn't seem like it offers any benefits compared to the Platinum Edge. At least that card offers travel credit to offset the annual fee.

Having gone back over the past month of posts, I don't see any reports of bonus points being offered to retain during January. I realise that AMEX is cracking down, but surely there are some points offers. I've contacted them once, but no success with the Plat Charge card. Will contact again next week. Annual fee is payable now. Not looking good.

So, I rang AMEX again, today, to cancel the Plat Charge (and to see if there's an offer). CSO at the overseas Call Centre gave totally different information to previous call.

If I cancel the card, then it's cancelled, I'm told. Can't be re-instated "… due to Australian Government new law …", etc, etc.

However, in the previous call I cancelled the card, no retention points offered, so re-activated on the spot.

HUCA, a bit annoying.

So, I just tried again. Another version, unfortunately.

I was advised that for the Charge card, the CSO can see whether there is a points offer available without going through the cancellation routine. If it were for a credit card, then I could cancel in order to check for an offer and then re-instate.

This has not been mentioned in my previous calls. Anyway, no offer of retention points for my Charge card. My MR point balance is now zero, having recently transferred almost one million points out.

Well, ive just been charged my two annual fees

Called to see if retention bonus might be offered now since deval occurs in only 2 months.

Called during busines hours 3 times but all phillipines.

Losing hope for either retention bonus or doubling :(

credit card retention offers such as annual fee waivers are no longer legal in Australia. When cancelling a credit card, banks are now required to action the request without suggesting an alternative or attempting to retain the customer.

Amex will no longer offer anything to keep you, dont bother trying it

Called last week instead of asking for retention bonus i asked for a discount on fees. She said she had to talk to her manager, 2 days later they were able to offer me 20k in points for my amex platinum charge. Not as generous as the 100k but still something.

Points have appeared in my account- annual fee due in 2 weeks

May I ask what number you called?
How much do you spend on the card monthly/do you think that mattered?

Annual fee due 19/3/19

Just wondering, Thinking about cancelling my amex but curious as to if i will be charged the yearly fee. My first transaction was on 10/02/2018, my yearly fee was charged on 01/03/2018. If I cancel now, will I be charged the fee before I leave? Any ideas?

You have 30 days to call up and cancel once it appears.
