Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Reporting back - rang to cancel my Qantas ultimate AMEX card today and they offered nothing even when I hinted that I'd like to stay - they quoted the new regulations etc. Nothing offered after cancelling either but like I said above, I'm probably not a desirable customer!

Throwing my experience in, called to canx my Explorer yesterday after several years of holding it, no dice. So now it's gone. I was on the fence, it's a borderline card for me since the deval, a retention may have swung it, but never mind.

Still have Platinum Edge, not sure if that influences things, have yet to decide whether to keep that one, with my fuel spend it's still probably my best option for KrisFlyer, for now at least. Tempted to bin it and restart the 18-month clock.

Called to cancel my Plat DJ amex as fee was due with last statement. Nothing offered after i cancelled. Transferred all my pts to Hilton Honors

Called to cancel Platinum Edge card. Held for over 10 years, nothing offered after cancellation.

Damn, it feels good to be rid of this junk card. Served me well until the devaluation but now it's like breaking up from toxic relationship - free and happy!

Called the other day for an unrelated matter and advised I was weighing up options as my AF is due on the 19th and was there anything they could offer to entice me to stay on:
"No offers at present on your account, but I recommend you call on the 19th to check on a retention offer"

I have a strong feeling she was giving me hope and glad she wasn't the one to tell me they can't do it anymore.

Platinum Charge Card

I phoned and asked when my annual fees were due. He told me, then said "may I ask why, are you thinking of cancelling" and I said yes I would be cancelling at least one before the due date.

No offer made there, but they are obviously copping a few still.

Called today to. Cancel the wife’s explorer . Said no retention offer avl

Yes, but even if you get a retention offer, it’s already artificially inflated (2:1 for airlines transfers?). Many of the offers are really only okay if you never intended to cancel, and were already going to retain for another 12 months anyway.

Called and was told no offer available for platinum card with annual fee due any day now. Agent suspected it was because I was given 70k points last year (prior to April deval). He noted I had 400k annual spend and he would escalate and have someone call me today to discuss.
I'm seriously considering cancelling if no offer is made.

Did you hear back?

Yes they've called (same person who gave me the 70k last year). They won't provide any points or annual fee reduction this year. They offered lower fee green or gold charge cards as alternatives. I said I'd think about it over weekend. I really am tempted to cancel.

Damn. They offered me that last year lol.

If you're going to cancel, I'd wait until after the annual fee has been charged. Then call to cancel. They can refund the annual fee if done within a few weeks of being charged. That might be sufficient to trigger a retention bonus.

AMEX are not doing much to keep cardholders. I had previously (before the devaluation) received 70,000 and 30,000 points on the Charge card. However, I cancelled earlier this year when they offered a very low amount.

Edit: If you are just after a points offer, but intend to keep the card, regardless, then that’s a different story I guess.

They can be fairly quick on refunding the fee. I got mine within 2 days of cancelling when they refused a decent points offer (offered 25,000 points; equates to 12,500 points per devaluation).

Called yesterday.
Not even a look in.

Raised the issue:
When can I use the benefits of my card in the foreseeable future (COVID-19 restricting travel)

She was very abrupt and said the annual fee is for the whole year not just 6 months.
I have 2 weeks to consider whether I want to cancel or not.

Issue I'm having:
I purchased honeymoon tickets via AMEX. First of all, the wedding will be delayed, second of all, it's a Oct flight. What happens to insurance if I cancel the card etc.

The insurance will be forfeited if you don't hold an active card/account with AMEX which you used to pay for when you are trying to claim. There's an story on A Current Affair had the same issue.

Yes, I actually posted that on here.

AMEX insurance have been exceptionally good. I've claimed about $7-8k this year alone. Even if the card had no benefits to me the annual fee has paid for itself.

12 months ago I was in the "cancel immediately due to deval" camp,

but after making a claim on phone screen insurance and realising my laptop purchase is extended by 1 yr warranty , highly likely I will keep paying the annual fee
