Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Possibly silly question - I forgot to cancel before annual fee was deducted last week (rookie!). Is this something I could get a prorata refund on if I don't get a decent retention offer?

Hope they answer their phone quicker than citibank did the other day!

Thanks :)

Can anyone shed any light on how re-activation works after cancelling an AMEX card? Ie, there's been a few reports upthread of people cancelling their card and then immediately being offered to re-activate with offers? How long is re-activation an option?

It's instant, they cancel your card and say if you're interested in reopening your account, I can offer you xx_ points. Reopened on the spot, your card number doesn't change and no additional credit check.

IME have to reactivate it on the same call. Once you hang up, that option to reactivate is gone and you have to re-Apply - at least that’s what I’ve been told. YMMV.

So what happened to the 30-day window for reactivation? Not Manila being mischievous again, is it?

It was always my understanding that any Amex card could be reactivated within 30 days. I have always been told that when I have cancelled cards in the past.
Yes, that’s been my experience as well. 30 days to re-activate.

Data point :
No need to wait for 2 weeks , my fee wasn't due until Feb 2021 , just call up today and really firm about cancelling the card even they said i could wait until Feb 2021 and call back . Got transfer to 2nd person who taking care of cancelling got offer 200K right away worth $1,000 as he say you can get a gift card or something to offset the annual fee .

I called today and wasn't offers any retention bonus/points. Might be silly thing but do we need to ask for the specific offer as the lady did not budge and initiated the cancellation process.

My credit file was accessed by Amex the day I asked for (and was denied) a fee waiver for the Plat Charge. It would be interesting to know what they were looking for.

I was also told I can re-open it within 30 days if I change my mind.

However, I will use this period of not much travel to serve the 18 months between sign-up offers!

Computer said “No”. ☹️

I don’t recall anyone posting that they received a fee waiver. Some have received points, but others received nothing. ☹

Thank you for confirming the 30-day period to re-activate a cancelled card.

Looking upthread, some seem to be under the impression that the card cannot be reactivated at a later date. Poor Call Centre advice.

Yes very true, but that’s what I asked for not points so didn’t want to be a false data point for someone chasing bonus points. 😊
