Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

thanks for that, gave it a shot with my 2 cards, no luck, no offers,
spoke to aus staff, who was very nice

I did ask if we can reinstate after cancelling, and she just ignored me, cancelled the card, and then said "sorry nothing is being offered"
sounded like she knew what I was trying to do, but was willing to, and quickly reinstated

might try again next month
I called again outside business hours and the guy said he will try the cancel to see if any offers process but best to call during business hours the day or two before the fee is due.
So ill give that a try

Called this morning so got through to Aussie call centre and went through the cancellation process and was offered a measly 10,000 points which I took and had the card reinstated. As mentioned by others you have first instruct them to cancel only then there is a possibility of being offered points. Btw my annual subscription is due this month.

What card? It’s only credit cards where you go through the dance. Charge card offers are straightforward with no cancel, then re-instatement for offers.

Plat Charge - annual fee due next month, so i range today to ask if my travel credit can be extended. This was declined.

I then asked if there was a retention bonus to keep the card given most of the benefits are travel related, agent said no initially, then "hang on", checks the system, offered 30k bonus points, which I accepted.

I sounded like an algorithm (presumably membership duration/total spend) determines your retention bonus should you call to cancel/ask about retention, as oppose to any human decision during the call.

I've got the Explorer and my travel credit was due to expire this month, called and got through to call centre in the Philippines and was told to call the Amex Travel during business hours. But I hung up and called immediately and another operator answered, put me on hold for a couple of minutes and was given a small extension till end of March 2021. I tried getting a longer extension and explained to the operator that I will unlikely be able to use it and he suggested that I call back in March to see if anything can be done then. I was assured that Amex will try to help and ensure that that such benefit is not lost.

gave it a final try on the explorer today, no luck

guy was nice, did the whole dance and spiel and he did throw in "well that would defeat the purpose of the cancellation process" comment in

looks like the amex gods are not with me at the moment,

still have the edge but it didnt work a few weeks ago

Yep - no Amex gods with me either - no dice for any retention offer.
Still kept it as have cleaned up on supermarket and travel credits. had to go through the cance/ reinstate dance too..

No luck on plat charge. Aussie call centre.
0 interest in having the discussion also lol.
It's almost like the Aussie call centre are the reverse of the offshore one. I also do wonder how many cards you need to hold and for how long - and how this impacts how they talk to you about these things.

I cancelled my Amex Plat CC last week as the fee was due, no points were offered and to be honest with the $1450 fee Amex would have had to offer in the vicinity of 200MR points to even consider keeping the card and even then it would be marginal. Amex did try and talk me into another card (explorer?) however once I mentioned I would not be cancelling my reserve card the conversation came to a halt. When we can travel again I will most likely get another Plat CC but that will be a future decision.

Hi Matt - Interested why you are keeping the reserve.... better value cards than $400 p.a for a $400 travel credit.
I didnt get half the offers on the reserve as I do on the charge.

Good question, until I cancelled the charge card the reserve was never used, I only had it as it was the free companion card for the Plat charge to get the $400 travel credit. I kept the card to ensure my MR points balance remains intact as I did not want to transfer the points to KF at the moment.

I reckon you should give it another go....i got 10K (though a measly sum) on my second attempt...10k is better than nothing so I accepted...

I don't think my Amex is really of any value any more, so I've just cancelled it. If travel ever comes back, I'll look at it again.

i gave it another try today for the Plat edge, no dice again, the travel credit is the only thing thats keeping me from cancelling,
so it is a bit of a first world problem, but $400 travel credit for $395 annual fee to spend on 10-20% overpriced hotels isnt a terrible deal,

thank god im not paying $1450 AF, that would keep me up at nighto_O

How long have you been with Amex and how long have you held the Platinum Charge Card?

I've only had mine for over a year so they weren't keen on any retention offers for me. They however did provide me with an option of downgrading to the Gold Charge Card.
