Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Qantas Premiere – they gave me a long list of reasons about why they can't refund half the cost after six months, including all the perks I've since used up. Fair enough; just thought I'd ask but, in short, their answer was 'no'.

Why should a business offer a pro-rata refund of the annual fee?

Why should a business offer a pro-rata refund of the annual fee?
Fair question.

How about: Why should a business charge an annual fee?

The way annual fees work on credit cards means it’s very hard to get 12 months (i.e. an annum) of value out of it. If you cancel the day before your annual fee is due, you lose all the reward points for that final month. If you cancel a month before, you loose a month’s access to the facility you’re paying an annual fee for.

Not true. On Amex Platinum Charge, the points earned are typically credited to your account within 2-3 days. So at most you'd only lose 2-3 days worth of points if you cancel at that point

Sure but that’s not a credit card and the post I replied to was about the Qantas Premier card …

Amex Plat Charge is an exception.

My experience is that you can cancel up to a month after AF is charged and they will refund the annual fee!

Have also downgraded from the Velocity platinum to the fee free Amex and had the AF refunded even though I had already booked the free flight that accrues for the new year, again after the AF was charged.
