What about current Gold Credit Card members? Anybody received any interesting "upgrade offers" out there?

I got a call from AMEX the other day asking if I had got my upgrade invitation. I haven't, so I don't know if the offer is interesting or not.

Regardless, I'll probably take up the offer, if and when I get it
Nothing at all :o  :?

I got my invitation to upgrade on Friday!!! I must be fairly low down the Amex pecking order :) Might just wait till the new year to send the form off.

One thing I noticed was a comment that they need your annual salary details to assign a credit limit. Has anyone had there credit limit changed as a result of upgrading from a gold amex credit card to a platinum amex credit card?

At least you got an invitation. I am so far down the food chain I may never be invited. :( Of course they are really happy with the amount of interest I am paying them monthly. Why upgrade a profitable sucker? :P

Think they were offering the Amex Plat at Brisbane Domestic airport over the weekend.

Tend to run from Amex sales ppl. If cornered, show my Amex plat and then run!

Gotta love the salesmanship shown from the agents at times!

I was over at BNE int. the other day (just seeing someone off unfortunately - no trips for me in sight!!) and the AMEX Plat girls were there. One approached me and asked if I wanted to sign up, I showed her my Centurion card and was floored by her response, quote "thats a nice card, but this one is sooo much better", I did ask her if she knew what a black AMEX was.

She said yes, but........ I now know where the failed Vermin trolley dollies wind up

In future i'll take the Mal strategy.

Cheers

I either say that my bankruptcy trustee wouldn't think it would be a great idea or at other times I say my parole officer says I'm not allowed.

LMAO. Yeah, amazing what they will do for a sale. I've had them tell me my "Gold CC" isn't as good as the one they're hawking. Once I moved to Plat though, I havn't had any dramas. I assume they know what the Plat CC is!

Saw a couple of Amex staffers on the airtrain one night (had seen them hawking at the airport in the morning, same day return meant I caught the airtrain home around 7pm). Was going to have a good chat to them about their job but didn't get a chance. Would love to chat to an Amex hawker at some stage, Just to work out how much they get paid, how they are employed and those kinds of things. BTW, Amex are now in shopping Centres in Brisbane. You can run, but they will find you !

Hi little_moody_angel,

Only three main areas I'm interested in:

1. Who employs the Amex reps? (somehow don't think it is Amex direct)
2. How much do they get paid normally. Base/and/or commission? How much commission per signup do they get? Is it only for successful applications, or anyone who fills out the form?
3. Do they get some kind of trailing commission?

If you want to answer these questions, PM is fine... Not sure they are the kinds of things that should be posted in public.

From what I understand they are not direct employees of Amex. I came across them a few times on the bus from Castle Hill to the City after a day's work. They would be at Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills, and I am sure other areas in Sydney and then sit there on the bus discussing things like how many suckers they conned today and what sort of card did they flog, how to close deals with customers, to report as much as possible in case the customer closes account in the cooling off period and they lose bonuses. All of this not considering that their discussion may be heard by an existing Amex account holder. I have felt ringing Amex on a number of occassions and complaining but have thought against it as I am not really concerned what they do.

I have seen these people on the same bus trip on other occassions discuss totally different products/companies.

Maybe little_moody_angel has better explanation but this is my experience with them. I totally refuse to deal with "hawkers" flogging Amex products, especially after listening to them discuss customers/clients as their meal ticket, and I do everything online now.

Hi there, Long time lurker, New Member :)

I have had a chance to have a chat to a rather cute Amex rep here in WA :) She convinced me to add the Gold Busineess Charge Card to my collection. (looking at her from 10 mins as she filled out the form was worth it :))

What she told me was she got (For gold applications) $28 if someone filled one out and signed it (Regardless of if they are approved or not (Amex call the client to confirm the actually applied) If the client activates the card they get $40 more.

She is emplyed by a company called Cobra and that company gets the same amounts as above.

Take this was a grain of salt. It is all 2nd hand knowledge.

Hey guys:
1. - There are a number of different agencies that promote the card .. one is Cobra. However this company does all sorts of promotions.. save the children, oxfam, virgin etc and they're not the main marketing agency for AMEX. There is another company called mobidata which is the largest provider of apps to AMEX.

2. - My understanding of Cobra's pay is they don't get a retainer and commission only and get something like 30 -40 per sign up (in sydney) and more when they are approved. Mobidata gets a base pay (around $12+) + commission for every app (varies with the card - golds around $10 each) + incentive ($50+ when they get 4 apps and more) + approval card commission ($10-15)

On average both companies earn the same... eg for 5 apps an agent can make around $200.

Re John's comment, I agree but BTW the people u c in the bus are probably Cobra. The problem with these agencies is the competetiveness between agents and their incentives. Both these agencies reward the high apps and therefore some agents can be unethical when doing the sign ups. eg: sometimes they lie, make up apps, etc.

Well.. hope that helped!!

Amex has certainly been hitting the shopping centres hard around here. Even when you day you've got the card they then try to swicth you to something else.

Don't think it is a job I could do for a living

I would tend to agree as the ones I overheard on the bus fitted this category. The giveaway was the very heavy English accent....

Makes a change from the accent that goes with marketers from mobile phone companies.

Do they do a check on your file if you are just upgrading from gold to platinum? I would suspect not, since they should already have a pretty good idea about your credit risk, but just wondering....

I've been gold for over a year. Very few transactions on the card though (just a backup freebee that I decided to take up!).

Was pre-approved (* Subject to credit assessment) for the Platinum, and still credit checked. My report is squeaky clean so not worried...

Well they checked mine yesterday. Now wait and see when my card arrives...
