AMEX not accepted or surcharge

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Said haircare product wholesaler still hasn't configured their POS machine for AMEX acceptance despite the big AMEX sign still up. But no worries - just found another shop outside one of the Woolies I go to that also stocks stuff I use. So it's a permanent loss for the aforementioned lazy merchant!

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Referring to my previous post, naming food outlets in the Brisbane CBD where Amex can be used:

I can think of a few:

McDonald's: [...] Central Station
Well we can take that one off the list, at least for the time being - when trying to use the card there, their terminal immediately displayed something along the lines of "txn cancelled - card not accepted" (as opposed to the Hungry Jack's terminals displaying "Contact Card Issuer" after waiting for it to process). I haven't tried Amex at any other Macca's stores in the Amex Directory yet, so perhaps it might still be a work in progress (as the stores were only recently added to the Directory). Has anyone had any success using Amex at Macca's recently? :)

On a brighter note, following a reply to an enquiry sent to TransLink, Amex is accepted for Go Card (Queensland smart card for public transport) top ups at certain 7-Eleven stores (Diners too) and "select newsagents who have Go Card top-up facilities and are American Express merchants, who may be willing to accept this method of payment for such a purchase" :D

Just topped mine up today with $150 on Amex - very happy :D

Just confirming that there's no change to Red Rooster over here, have tried 5 different stores over the past 2 months and all are still accepting without any issue.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

We are extemely unlucky in Australia.

Amex is accepted almost anywhere in Canada and no surcharge....

Asia too... they even have discounts for using AMEX at quite a few boutiques I went to.

And even non boutiques, too. Citibank seems to be the other main card that can get you discounts in SIN.

Hong Kong has a lot of these offers with various cards (HSBC seems to be a big one) but it looked like it was only relevant to the locally issued cards?

Biggest surcharge rort I've seen wasn't even Amex. 10% surcharge on eftpos or Visa/Mastercard transactions at Hollywood Showgirls on the Gold Coast. Obviously want as many people to pay in cash as possible due to the nature of the business...

Nope, I got some nice discounts at a few places with my Oz-issued AMEX. :)

I'd rather pay cash and avoid having that appear on my statement, I'd be too worried if the other half finds out where I've been or what I've been up to ;)

Don't such venues usually post transactions rather "discreetly"? Don't ask how I happen to know....

Not like Sammie's Girls (formerly Sam's Seafood), a seafood shop in Brisbane who's transactions show up as "Sammie's Girls".

We had caught up with another couple who live at the Gold Coast and had dinner at Hooters, then the boys were off to shoot some guns and catch a stripshow with the girls blessing. Only thing I did get in trouble for was not getting a lapdance, as she couldn't think of birthday present at the time and that was supposed to be it!!!

I paid cash anyway because I had it, but my mate was too lazy to walk across the street to the ATM that they had even pointed out for him so he copped the surcharge.

How nice. I'm sure everyone had a jolly good time.

You're forgetting that taxis load up 11% on any credit card used for payment.

It's a 10% service charge for using a credit card, then 10% on that service charge as a GST.

Lol - the 10% is probably to make up for the taxes they would have probably "avoided" if cash was used, because we all know what EFTPOS really costs - next to nothing! Haha

I believe Cabcharges' fees to taxi drivers are nothing short of highway robbery - there is definitely a cost there.

Probably the high number of chargeback requests they get. I presume your mate had to show his driver's license and get it copied or some other similar method of proving he authorised the transaction?

I think Amex is the worst (from an adult club's perspective), as chargebacks will normally go in the client's favour due to the nature of the industry and a clause in their merchant conditions... what happens to the client after that I wouldn't like to find out!!
