AMEX not accepted or surcharge

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Your logic is sound, but when have you actually seen a 1.7% difference in pricing in practice?

More likely, the business will just absorb the cost and make less money, which will have other negative effects (poorer service maybe), but increased pricing will not be one of them.

No logic at all really
The large majority of places do not surcharge for Amex and if they do they have still been cheaper than the other place down the road that is "pay less pay cash" for example.

Also an upfront possible saving of 1.7% is nothing when the rewards are 10-25% on my spend

Random addition, but all of the $2 (cheap) shops that I've seen or entered accepted Amex with no surcharge, and their prices were quite low :). And if you don't mind me asking, what type of Amex card are you using to get this value you from your rewards? :)

Also, kind of exciting because I haven't received one of these in a while, but I got another reply from Amex today:

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

It seems the Caltex/Woolworths near me (Great Eastern Highway, Rivervale) has quietly dropped their credit card surcharge. Excellent news - now I can stop buying Wish cards. :D

You're much closer to me than I thought, that's also my closest C/W

Eyeworks on Chapel St. I was going to pick up a pair of Paul Smith's but was told that they didn't take AMEX. No worries I'd simply wait till my shopping trip to London. But I went home and reported my experience to AMEX anyway using the merchants' suggestion link - only to get an email back from AMEX advising that Eyeworks is in fact an AMEX merchant.:evil:

You could report them again answering "yes" to the very first question on the form, and then you can choose the option that they asked for another card instead, even though they have an Amex agreement - that way Amex know what's happening :)

... Unless you already did that, and Amex didn't bother to look lol

I reported them as a non-AMEX accepting merchant. Per your advice I've re-reported them as an AMEX merchant which refused AMEX as a FOP. Will see what happens.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Hey all,

Although mentioned in the General Credit Card Discussion forum, I thought it also relevant to mention here... that

PAYPAL AUSTRALIA *FINALLY* ACCEPTS AMEX! :D :D :D :D

(Whistles and streamers) :D

I've just added mine to my account, and set it as the primary card. No surcharge, and no currency conversion issues as some people previously reported. Also, the fee for merchant has not increased.

eBay however has not added Amex for direct payment of seller fees, but you can set up an Amex autopay for eBay fees by selecting the PayPal option on the Account page. I'll be testing my card very soon :D

I must admit that literally 80% ( I did a head count) of my CC transactions are via Amex. Even the kids school takes it for school fees.

I can't complain too much.

Do you earn MR points with Paypal? I recall something about them not earning, hopefully I am wrong.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

I tried to add my AmEx Platinum credit card, and my gold charge card, both failed. I contacted PayPal, and the reply was they do not allow adding AmEx anymore.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

I received a reply today from Amex regarding a restaurant that I reported about 6 months ago for not accepting the Amex card.

It was the "Management has declined to offer to accept the card" email

As such I will NEVER be visiting that restaurant again, and I have also emailed them to let them know I won't be going there due to their non acceptance of the card.

I added my Amex on Friday and it worked fine, on my wife's account I tried to change it on Saturday and Sunday and it was knocked back. Now I know why, though hopefully its a temporary thing

I've added mine also, but it no longer works :@ :@ (Although still appears in the account and also as a payment option) After contacting PayPal support for the second time, here was there response:

PayPal said:
I understand that you're having difficulty adding your AMEX card. I apologise for the inconvenience ChrisCh. Our technical team is working to resolve the issue that we have with American Express Card Company. We don't have the timeframe but I assure you that were working to resolve it.

Just when I thought PayPal had finally departed of the third world for Australian users... :p

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

How come you got different answer?
After actually being able to (successfully) add my card, I then tried to use it to purchase something on eBay, and received an error. Contacted PayPal support, who first blaimed the issuer for blocking the transaction (the issuer being Westpac - old Earth annual fee $100 cheaper than QFF Amex with same transfer rate)... I called Westpac, they checked with their fraud team and said they were not blocking it, and blamed Amex. Called Amex, who acknowledged problems with PayPal Australia transactions... (they weren't clear on whose fault it was)

So as PayPal's first reply blamed Westpac, I sent them an email to PayPal again, politely informing them that there was no problem with the issuer, and asking if they could inform me when the problems have been fixed, thus the new reply :)

Full details in the PayPal topic in the General forum. :)

This is awesome news, however I checked out the AMEX website yesterday to see the bonus partners and BP is a bonus partner - 1.5 bonus points per dollar, so I'll be switching to BP from now now!!! There are some other cool partners on there too that I'd definitely shop at like Vintage Cellars and an awesome offer for hotelclub, 5 bonus points per dollar, definitely booking all my holidays through that now!

:p :p :p :p

The only problem with BP is that they seem to have dropped regular unleaded from all of their stations, and only sell E10. I've seen a few studies which show there's no benefit to the car, and very little for the environment.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Airport Tarmac Tours charge a whopping 5% for AMEX!
