Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

The Reserve bank treats AMEX (and Diners) seperately as they are a non-bank financial institution and therefore aren't under the same rules as your typical credit card provider.

Thanks for that tip John...on the differences. I will have a look. However as I live and drive in the inner suburbs I think I may be in trouble as I think all the ""Woolworths" station that I drive past were originally Clatex stations.

Did they buy any out...or just build new ones at Supermarket sites???
As far as I know, in NSW, Woolworths has bought service stations that were previously owned by Caltex/Ampol. Some of these I have seen knocked down to the ground and re-built again. Not sure what has happened in other states though.

There are 4 Woolworths service statios within 5 kms of Melbourne GPO. Are these close enough to you or do you drive past them. There is Woolworths Caltex Fitzroy, Woolworths Caltex North Melbourne, Woolworths Caltex Northcote and Woolworths Caltex Moonee Ponds.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Thanks for that again John,

Unfortunately (well not really as it is a great place for an office) I work in Brighton and live in City of Monash...so do not regularly go though the City...

i will check out some other Caltexs that I pass though.

I havea feeling I will be switching to Shell as I pass a number...just hope that they do not bring it in as well.

However I havea Safeways Supermarket in walking distance.

However it is probably about time I pulled my finger out anyways as you can get 5% discount vouchers for shopping at Coles via the API and can pay by AMEX.

There are 3 types of Caltex service stations. Caltex (no association with Woolworths), Caltex Woolworths and Woolworths Caltex.

Thanks for the clarification. I always thought there were only Caltex and Safeway/Woolworths Caltex. Didn't know there's a Caltex Safeway/Woolworths... mmm...

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Drove past a different Safeways/caltex on the way home....unfortunately it had the same signs up:(

I live a bit further away from the city in Patto and can assue you the local Safeway + Petrol is not about to start surcharging CC's.

It is highly unlikely that Coles or Woolworths will introduce a surcharge in the near future. Coles recently purchased an additional 90 Shell sites which are now Coles Express.

Hard to tell the type of service station. It does not sound like it is a Safeways/Caltex. Did you check on the Caltex service station finder? In which suburb is this service station?

I purchased petrol today from Woolworths/Caltex and the receipt has Woolworths all over it. Not a single mention of Caltex.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Well better news tonight.

Filled up at a different Safeways/caltex tonight...and no signs:) atter of knowing which.

However this will bea hassle when you go on a long trip....or just to a different loication.

So hopefully it just a m

Maybe if you take a moment to think, you will realise that 270 points is worth virtually nothing.

But then I suppose every penny or point counts.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

Which is why you dida 1:1 earn VISA..

There are many places that do not take AMEX..but do take VISA

You're not alone. My electricity retailer only accepts Bpay and direct credits... (at least I can Bpay from my Visa!)

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

On a positive note Medibank private now accepts Amex.

Also Sanity, Pittwater Council, MCL Insurance, Barker College, University of Canberra, Brighton Grammar Melbourne to name a few places that now accept Amex.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

I am starting to find a bit strange the number of restaraunts that surcharge for AMEX, but have 25% or 50% vouchers reasonably easily available. The fact they give out such discounts says something about the markup on your average meal.

Which provides more support for my arguement that many small retailers dont want to accept Amex because of the hassle and bad practices of Amex for merchants, as opposed to the 2.5-3% fee.

Months ago, I used the "Where else would you like to use your Card?" form on the Amex site and put Medibank on it. I wonder if that helped.

Re: AMEX not accepted or surchage

I am both a merchant and a consumer using/accepting Amex Mastercard and Visa. I dont decline nor surcharge my clients...I have more respect for the sale. The extra merchant fee that Amex charges is not sufficient to deter acceptance from my customers....a sale is a sale. I dont understand why so many merchants dont accept Amex. I use my AMEX whenever I can....my spend is roughly 50/50....using the Altitude Platinum Amex/ Mastercard accelerates my points accumulation to twice my Visa ( capped ) which I will only use in an emergency ( like over my limit....soon to be increased). Currently spending $30-$35K/month....will get there quicker as I only intend to fly once a year....business class
