Amex PayPal Acceptance

Only had VISA /Mastercard or Discover Options just then.

AU Verified Business Account here.

Just logged into a second account, Personal account - Amex option available there and worked...
Wonder why the Amex option is only there for personal PayPal accounts.

Just paid my Origin Gas (VIC) bill using PayPal and Amex. It's a 2-monthly bill so I won't know until next bill whether Origin have surcharged me, as they did last month when I used Visa. I'll check in a few days' time what points have been added to my ANZ Visa/Amex account. It may be close call between lower Amex points for utilities and surcharge for Visa. Only a small bill so useful as an experiment.

Hi,

You could always add it with a US based account, can be worth keeping a USD option open for sites like fatwallet. Couple of options I'm interested in here, if you are on of the usual suspects then please contact me.

If you are using an ANZ issued Amex then you will get your normal points earn for this - it is only Amex issued Amex cards that have a lower points earn for Utilities...

Hi,

I noticed that it also lists Discover. Considering that Discover owns Diners Club does that mean that you can use a Diners Club card on here? Anyone know how that works in general?

Good to know. Thanks for that, greenfrog86. Do you happen to know if that also applies to ATO payments?

Correct. Bank issued Amex cards haven't changed ATO or utilities, this only relates to American Express issued cards.

Some bank issued cards may not be happy with business ATO payments however as this breaches their personal use terms... Many aren't enforcing this but you do run the risk

Diners cards are designed to also work on the Discover network... You will see the Discover logo on the back of your Diners card. That's how this works

I can confirm that AU Diners does work on PayPal, however it sometimes wants to do a conversion within PayPal despite the transaction and the card being in AUD. the PayPal rate is of course awful so this isn't worth doing if it comes up

On postbillpay they indicate on the payment page whether there is surchage.

Is there a charge for making payment with Postbillpay?
Australia Post does not charge you when you use Postbillpay to pay bills, however your financial institution may charge you for electronic transactions, and some billers may charge you a processing fee for payments made via Postbillpay. If an extra charge is added at the time you make a payment, this will be shown clearly on the Postbillpay payment confirmation page before you confirm your payment.

I've paid my Origin gas bills by Visa using Postbillpay for a long while prior to the Nov.-Jan. one for which the charge is now showing up on the Jan.-March one. The small print on the back of the Origin bill does say "Payments by Visa or Mastercard may incur a processing fee of 0.6% (incl. GST)", but no charge has been applied on previous payments done this way. I don't think it is related to the size of the bill as this one was within a couple of dollars of other recent ones where no extra charge was applied.

So Origin seem to have changed their policy and now (since January at least) do impose that charge when paying by Visa or Mastercard via Postbillpay (but apparently not when paid via telephone). All the more reason to pay by Paypal using Amex, which they don't accept by telephone, or on the Postbillpay site itself.

I didn't notice the charge on the Postbillpay confirmation page, but that bill was paid nearly 2 months ago and I wasn't expecting to see a charge so perhaps I simply didn't notice it.

What about if you're using DJ Amex, I looked at he terms and it says nothing about getting lower points for utilities. I suppose its not an Amex issued card. Anyone know? Shame you can't pay your tax by PayPal and lose the fee imposed by the ATO.

the original poster is a legend for informing me about this :)

Now i can pay my AGL bill using paypal + Amex and hopefully I can earn full reward points for every dollar spent. Can't wait....

Thanks for the heads up. Waiting to see how it posts, 1 for 1 or the 'utility' rate of 0.5. If I'm the first I will let you know!

Momentum Energy 1.5 points per $1 using 'Rewards' Amex (27/3/13).
The Origin gas bill paid by Paypal + Amex isn't showing up yet.

How to pay AGL with Paypal? I cannot seem to see that option!

Given it's based on Paypal's merchant number, then you would expect that it will come up as 1 point per dollar.

Paid my Telstra bill with 1 for 1 reward points - thanks for notifying everyone of the change to Paypal...

Just bought something off eBay US and obviously the merchant wants USD - I wonder will I be billed USD by PayPal or converted to AUD by them? I guess I will soon find out.
