amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 11 March 2025 can also earn 200,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Any idea why my referral for this card offers the referee 150k points when they can get 200k points going straight to the amex website? This seems ridiculous. I don't think I've made any referrals this year.

Also, I have a friend who wants to sign up, can't in good conscience recommend my referral...happy if anyone has a 275k referral to send to her.
I’m in the same position. I don’t refer and don’t put my link on this site - makes no sense that it’s worse than just going direct.

Mine is the same.

I assume it is because 150k for the new customer plus 50k for the referrer = 200k, so if they are not paying a referrer they give it all to the new customer.

I gave them a call, they were confused as to why it didn't align, but said if you refer someone and they meet the criteria, they can call up to get the 50k differential as long as they sign up during the promotional period. Annoying and risky for the sign up, but at least it's something

Ozbargain has a deal that generates random 275k point referral links so can always get thar bonus, annoying to not get a bonus for using my own referal link, but I'm not referring my friends to a bad deal.

I have been unable to access benefitsglobal.americanexpress for two days now, so cannot access benefits tracker or signup for anything new - no explanation from Amex and live chat just ignored my query as to why it was down.

Your referral offer tends to change randomly. I’ve had 6 or so people use my link and tell me the amounts at it changes, even on the same day.
