amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

AFF members are welcome to discuss this card in this thread.

I just went to use my travel credit online and the hotels I looked at were nearly 100 a night dearer than the rates that the travel team can get. I rang to ask why and they basically use three different suppliers. Why should the rate be any higher than what I can get through the travel team? Once again the platinum status of members means nothing

As mlob said you need to choose the FHR rate. It'll be a whole separate hotel with only FHR.

In my experience, FHR rates won't show if I have less than about 10,000 MR points in my account.

Having similar issues here. I have manually located a FHR hotel on a list with non-FHR hotels. When I click into it, it doesn't show any FHR rates.

Does this matter if I have two different Amex cards saved into my account? Or am I doing something wrong?

I have a question, What material are the recent platinum cards made of ? Do they come with some alloy mix in it or just pure plastic ?

:|
I just spoke to my account manager and he told me that the new platinum cards aren't pure plastic but have some alloy in it.

Bullocks - I have a Platinum Charge and a Platinum Reserve Credit card in front of me and they are exactly the same. Perhaps the alloy is an invention of the marketing dept :p

lol! Yeah thought so. Hence I have emailed him and would want to hear his answer in writing.

They will call you comes renewal time: https://www.accorplus.com/platinumaustralia - note this is only to renew Accor Plus, with that you will automatically get Silver but Gold / Platinum status is no longer provided by AMEX so you need to earn it.

Sorry, the accor programs are really confusing. Never really understood the difference between Accor Plus and Le club programs.

Currently, is it the Accor Plus Platinum level which provides us with room upgrade, special rates and discount off F&B?

Just wanted to check. Does the Priority Pass expire when we cancel the Amex card or can it be used beyond even after we cancel the card?

Usually is granted for a year. Have found that this has not been chopped short.

Accor plus is one thing and Le Club Platinum level is another.
Putting it roughly:-

Accor Plus add on program previously free with card (Costs $349/year although discounted to $259 for the one year)
# Complimentary night per year
# Dinning discounts
# 10% extra off room rates
# Silver level in Le Club Loyalty program

Le Club Loyalty program previously granted Platinum status with card (Now you will have to earn it each year through stays)
# Room Upgrades
# Early and Late check in
# Access to the lounges were available
# Bonus points

I think I got that all straight and I hope that helps ninja-tim.

OMG thank you so much. So confusing having 2 programs for the same hotel group.

So Accor Plus is the paid for membership and Le Club Loyalty is the loyalty/stay based program?

So paying for the Accor Plus membership pays for itself if you use the complimentary stay and dine at one of their restaurants with the discount atleast once a year.

Recently cancelled my platinum charge card and my priority pass has been cancelled :(
It was initially valid for 3 years but it seems as soon as I cancelled my charge card, my priority pass was cancelled. It did take about a month to reflect this though.

That's good to know as someone else mentioned that it last beyond the time that the card gets cancelled.

Does Amex cancel SPG gold memberships as at Platinum Charge closure? I'm considering closing mine too.

Amex cancelled my PP too when I cancelled. I didn't mention it earlier because I thought it was a once off/bad luck.
