amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Not sure what you mean. It pretty much means that at present there's a $300 travel credit for the Charge and either a hotel night or a free flight for the Reserve, and potentially two travel credits ($300+$400?) if the rumoured changes go ahead.

All seems like a bit of a shambles to me, really.

Ah thanks. That makes sense. For some reason I had thought it's only travel credit / free flight (via the Reserve card).

Time for me to apply and get the sign-up bonus :)

Do it soon. Their office is shutting down for xmas on the 18th. Husband who is the primary plat card holder ended up taking the offer for Accor and I also a took a sup card for $99.

I rang them this morning and was able to retain Platinum so I paid up for the year.

My Platinum Reserve Card, which is of course foc with the Platinum Charge Card, has suddenly started earningall MR points on my Ascent Premium account at 1 per dollar whatever the purchase rather than at 3,2, or 1 point like the Charge card. The charge card continues to earn at the correct rates. Has this happened to anyone else? Did I miss a change or is this a malfunction ?

I received my renewal call today... I've stayed 11 nights this year, but they weren't prepared to offer anything more than Silver. So I wasn't prepared to renew.

I just received my call from Accor Plus. I had 14 nights in 2016 with enough points to get Gold in my own right, but the lady who called wasn't prepared to offer a renewal of Platinum.

When I pushed she acknowledged there was a period last year where they were doing it but they're not anymore, so I said I won't I'd only renew if they did that and she said to call if I change my mind and ended the call.

When I renewed in December they said it was the last month they are offering free platinum. I think it has to do with the Accor membership program as if they renewed you with platinum it would be valid until December 2018.

Yes, it use to be a free flight on the reserve but I believe it's been changed to travel credit. This is in addition to the $300 credit that comes with the charge.

Thanks for that
So it looks like its a $400 travel credit, along with the $300 travel credit - so $700 all up for the Charge. It's not too bad - The total fee is only $1200 - I am sure the other benefits are worth more then $500...
Are there any other travel credits they don't put on the official website?
cheers

An option I considered was to only use the Charge for business transactions (using the Reserve for other transactions) and offsetting the fee as an expense.
However the (Harvey Norman in particular) statement credits got the better of me before I ordered the Reserve

There aren't any other travel credits but the statement credit offers should more than take care of the remaining $500.

Thanks for that, you guys are making it hard for me not to sign up to it
So with the Plat charge I can make 4 supps off it at no charge - the website isn't so clear on this.
Then I can also get a reserve card for it , can I get supps of that card as well?
Another perk of the card is I can transfer to QFF...my work generates 40k MR (@ 1% fee) and 30k MR @ 2% fee /month ...so the MR builds up quite quickly.
What is 1st class availability on QFF compared to SQ? Much of a muchness?
Almost about to pull the trigger on this card...

Yes, you can apply for supplementary cards for the Reserve too.

I can't really comment on the F seat availability except to say that with QF you need to booking 353 days in advance to stand a chance and the likelihood of 2 seats on the same flight are pretty slim.

That's a brilliant idea actually! Hmm...very tempting.

Hey all
Bit confused by the platinum charge card
I've read all the info here https://www.americanexpress.com/au/...mage&s_tntref=https://www.americanexpress.com
and most of this thread, but can I clear up a few things

With this card, can you apply for a Platinum reserve as a 2nd card that has no annual fee and you get a $xx_ travel credit along with the $300 travel credit on the charge card?

Thanks

If one also got the Explorer card as the free card, would one also get the 100k MR points bonus for that too? So 200k MR points if you signed up for the Platinum charge, take the Explorer as the freebie?

I don't think that is how it works, but correct me if I am wrong
Only the reserve comes with the Plat charge

The reserve card is fee free I am sure
So all up you can get 1+ 4 supp for the Charge and then 1+ 4 supp for the Reserve?

Just another question regarding ascent premium - does another tab come up with that reward program - kind of like having ascent and gateway?
I have never had a ascent premium before, so I guess if it comes linked or unlinked, I would be able to make the required spend to get the bonus pointd either way?
cheers

Answer to the above is yes it does :-)

Just another question for people with this card, for the FHR
  • An on property benefit, often $100 USD in credit per stay
Is this just once per year? or for every booking you make? What's to stop you booking 5 time's in a row 1 night each for 5 x $100 credits?

cheers

For me Ascent Premium replaced Ascent once I got my Charge. So in short no.

for every booking you make (with a fhr hotel)

guess there's nothing stopping you from making 5 X bookings? can't say i've tried it though..
