amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

I had a friend contacting me today regarding the Amex Velocity Platinum free flight. She was a tad bit upset to put it politely. She got a list from Amex regarding the flights and from Perth they only had flights to Karratha, Port Hedland, Broome and Newman. No mention of Sydney or Adelaide. Told her to ring up and they did confirm that those were also on the list of available flights, they were just not advertised on the printed list.
Wonder why they dont tell the customers all the info, but only parts of it.

Very weird. Sydney and Adelaide are listed on their flight map, clearly just not in their printed booklet

Anyone here with Accor Platinum status still from back when AMEX had it as a bonus and tried to renew Accor Plus and seen what the status outcome is? Looks like there not giving bonus Platinum status any longer. Time to say good by to Accor.

Yep you need to earn Accor Platinum nowadays...

I was offered Platinum for another year if I was prepared to pay for a membership. Considering I’d only stayed at an Accor hotel once during the membership year and I didn’t think going to their restaurants on date night was very appealing, I didn’t renew.

I was able to get a status match to HH Diamond before it ran out. Diamond status expires in March. Just came back from a stay at Conrad Maldives (some Hilton and Conrad stays during the year though not enough to retain Diamond solely from stays) so got some benefit. Will need to decide whether to get Macquarie Visa to maintain Diamond before it expires or stuck with Gold membership that comes with Platinum Charge card.

Can I ask when this was? Just recently or close to 12 months ago?

I realise this is not free platinum but if you join the ibis business program for 90euros/year you get free accor gold. then you can status match that to the others.. relatively cheap outlay imo.

I'm still platinum. Got asked if I wanted to renew my accor plus memberhsip a couple weeks ago and was told I re-qualify for platinum for another year, Nov 2017- Oct 2018. I've only stayed in accor a total of about 8 days this past year, so I guess it doesn't take much to re-qualify compared to what it states on their website (~60 nights?).

I'm still confused on how I re-qualify each year as the dashboard online doesn't really look accurate and shows 2 different expiry dates for my platinum status. One for end of October 2018 and then one for the end of this year.

I can remember years ago that Amex Plat offered "2 for one" business class tickets .( Not companion fares)
This would come in handy for me and my partner.
Are these still available?

Should be although reports that the scheme (for US issued plats at least) has been revamped to offer 'competitively' priced quotes for business tickets.

The '2 for 1' offer only related to FULL price business tickets not any business saver or equivalent fares unfortunately and often it was cheaper just to buy the lower priced business class tickets.

Often but not always!

Wow, I have never seen this benefit advertised by Amex.

Noted, so perhaps not that much of a benefit anyway.

I always thought this was a perk of the centurion only

I always thought this was a perk of the centurion only

No it was shared around but relatively unknown (too far into the T&Cs for most people to get to).

Now it does seem to have been replaced in Australia as well as the US (widely publicised for the US).

Yes, but only to 1 supplementary card holder.

You can only register for Hilton gold for the supplementary card holder after you received the card, then you can go to the Platinum benefit area and add the HHonor account details.
