amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

I am.not sure if this has been covered elsewhere but I notice that the Amex plat in Thailand has access to Thai airways business class lounges -Complimentary access airport lounge at Royal Silk of Thai Airways has anybody tried to access the lounges?

One of my sup card holders tried this, all be it by accident and got told it's not a Thai card so no access. They were meant to hand over Priority Pass hence learnt about this. They also were at the wrong lounge!

Good news re: ACCOR (ADVANTAGE) PLUS complimentary membership - Amex amended the info on their website and it's now going to continue until March 2016... my Accor Plus membership is due to expire at the end of November 2015 so hopefully it will be renewed for another 12 months until November 2016 :)

I find that Thai staff are generally fairly strict with lounge access.

I flew out of BKK a few weeks back on SQ, with BKK-SIN sector in J and then immediately following that in SQ F. By virtue of holding a star alliance first class ticket on the same day, I tried getting access to the TG F lounge but I was told its a no go as I'm departing in J only.

I don't know the star alliance rules specifically enough to comment on whether I should've received access or not according to the official rules however from previous experience, I've generally had luck in similar situations so I was actually a bit surprised to be turned away.

Is that just for new card applications? How will this effect those who already have the card?

Re: ACCOR PLUS

There's been no change to the AMEX Platinum Benefits Directory site (i.e., for existing members, I guess) :(. It still states " ... available from 1 October 2013 until 30 September 2015 ...":

Maybe only new card members will get the extended offer to 30 March 2016?

I think I had a look on the Thai AMEX website for Plat Charge card and it said lounge access only permitted to Thai Amex customers.

Did anyone care to take a look at the most recent Departures magazine? It had an invitation to the Samsung White Glove service. I wondered what this was and googled it and supposedly, it is a concierge program targeting influential individuals to promote the use of Samsung products, with names of some celebrities.

But the invitation looks horrible and I doubt there's much value (i.e. no chance to score any Samsung freebies - I use apple almost exclusively) but I was wondering whether anyone has received the same and used it before...

Haven't opened my Departures yet, but looks like its going in the bin too if it's just rubbish.
