amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Also appears there will be 5% (Amazon) / 10% (other 3) bonus value on gift card purchases for Apple, Rebel, Airbnb and Amazon (first two from 3-16 August, last two from 17-31 August).

Only when redeeming MR points though. I haven't looked into the cent per point return, but I'm assuming it's terrible value.

Member month has just launched and from my reading the following promos are taking place this month:
  • Discounts on flights booked with NZ, EY, HA, JL, LA, MH, QF, SQ, VA, AC via Amex Travel
  • Discounts on QR, EK and UA also available for Platinum and Centurion only (presumably via IAP)
  • Velocity +??% transfer (TBC)
  • Bonvoy +50% transfer
  • Hilton +30% transfer
  • Amex offers for Net-A-Porter, Mr Porter, Country Road (exact offers TBC)
@sudoer, some of the airlines listed in the first dot points is supposed to be part of Aus IAP - does that mean not all airlines under the program are participating in the Member's month IAP flight discounts?

The way the promo is worded, discounts from the airlines in the first dot point appear to be available to non-Plat/Centurion card holders also, i.e. cardholders that don't have IAP access.

Discounts from airlines in the second dot point are specifically limited to Plat/Centurion members.

Ticked over to Accor Gold today with their new offer of 20 Status Nights. This is my first year with the card, anyone know if I need to reenrol in Accor Plus when my annual fee charges or should it remain active?

Did you have to do anything to activate/receive those nights into your account? Nothing here yet with Accor Plus via AX.

Not sure what to search for in this thread, so apologies if it’s been discussed. How long does it take for offers to appear in the app or on the website? For example the dining credit offer for enrolment hasn’t appeared after 5 days, I have no offers at all. Am I just being impatient?

My experience is that if it doesn't turn up in a couple of days it won't. There used to be a separate amex offers site that you could download some offers onto cards that missed out on a widespread offer but I think that went a couple of years back.

Mine took about a week to start appearing - if you hit up chat though they can manually enrol you into some of the benefits that come with the card, I had to get the Amazon Prime offer manually added as my renewal was 5 days after the card arrived

Gm guys, I was wondering does anyone know how long it usually takes to get access to accor plus after enrolling on the AMEX website following getting a new AMEX Plat Charge card? Been waiting a week or so since enrolling with no further information provide.

After a few weeks of crickets when I signed up, I called Accor Plus member services (onshore). They confirmed they hadn't received the request from Amex, then I logged a case with Amex card services and it was all resolved in a couple of days.

Just called up. They said it will take 2 weeks. So need to wait one more week before calling back I guess.

Is there a way to check which hotels / availability etc provided by accor plus without having login details?

I applied for the Accor through the AMEX online benefits page for the card, and received the Accor membership confirmation email 1 week later, this was 2 weeks ago.

Maybe you're looking for an email from AMEX instead of Accor

In the 2 weeks, I've already received 5 marketing emails from Accor

Received the email from accor last night so all good. Wondering if I will get the recent 20 night stay promotion from a couple of weeks ago. And would that automatically bring me to gold status?
