amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

AFF members are welcome to discuss this card in this thread.

I called amex yesterday and they said they are still negotiating with Accor for extension. They will write to us in writing in March if they cannot negotiate the extension.

I wonder if they will replace it with something else? I rang the call center today about it and got different answers.

So I called Amex today and got another answer (who went and ask the manager): existing Amex platinum charge card holders will continue to get Accor Platinum and Accor Plus as long as they hold the card, but new card holders will either get another benefit or nothing.

Whether you believe it or not only time will tell.

Anyone can give me some advice on how the Business Platinum Charge card compares to the Personal one? Is there a reason no one talks about the Business Platinum? Torn between the 2, Thanks

you only get 2 X points @ restaurants, travel related purchases.
priority pass + virgin lounge access.
no accor plus
no 200 travel credit

$1500 annual fee, but 150,000 bonus points.

I'm sure someone who holds one would be able to chime in about the actual business related features.

Probably to do with the extra annual fee, not to say the personal one is cheap at $1200, but the business one is very very expensive at $1500! The main benefit of the business card would be the GST reporting functions etc. If you don't need the ATO functionality, or the extra points earn on advertising, computers and couriers then I reckon the personal one is a better deal - even though the business card is offering a signup bonus of 150k pts over the 120k pts on offer for the personal card.

The only other reason is the business card has a higher points cap of 375k pts / yr (the personal is 300k I think) - no "bonus pts" are earnt once this cap is reached. Or in other words, all spend (inc restaurants and travel etc) reverts to 1pt/$.

Could any one tell me what the point conversion ratio is for this card to krisflyer / asiamiles?
From what I can see, it is $1 = 1 pt for supermarket spend?

Just trying to figure out whether this card is worth it for me

Kris flyer and Asia Miles are both 1 point per Amex point. Supermarket spend is only 1 point per $1. I use this card mainly to pay for all travel expenses and restaurants. I use other cards at the supermarket. Unless I'm chasing QFF for some reason which isn't often as most of my focus now is on Virgin. I just recently took up the Edge card to maximise my point earn at supermarkets. When I log into that account it points me back to my charge card for point accrual. I'll be very interested to see if they differentiate between the two award accounts or whether my edge points will just pool to my charge card.

is the edge card on the same $1 : 1 KF/Asiamiles?

I have David jones card at the moment but its conversion rate is bad to KF/Asiamiles

All my Amex issued cards (including edge) pool to the same MR Ascent premium account linked to my Platinum Charge. I think the only difference is ability to manually transfer to QFF with Ascent Premium. Good to have that option just in case - otherwise not much difference.

I have the Edge and the Plat Charge cards. Looking at the AMEX web site, I couldn't see where I can transfer Edge points to the Plat Charge MR points pool. I had assumed that it wasn't possible, and have been thinking about cancelling the Edge (not using it as much as I had thought I would, anyway).

Edit: Just telephoned AMEX, who have now linked the cards and transferred the Edge balance. If it wasn't for your post, I may never have found that out. Thanks, albyd. So all good now.

Interesting; I thought pooled points under the MR Ascent Premium was the "standard" if you had a Platinum Charge. I wanted the opposite when I first opened my Plat Charge, as I thought I'd cancel it after a little while, but was told it couldn't be done (by AMEX). Doesn't matter now as I intend to keep my charge.

My situation was slightly different in that I already had the Plat Charge, and later applied for the Edge. So, the linking part (unknowingly) fell through the cracks.

I was never aware that linking the Edge to the Plat Charge MR pool was even possible (as distinct from the Reserve).

It is variable. I suspect it depends on the rep that answers the call at the time. But it is certainly possible (and desirable). I think I told them it was easier to deal with one MR balance. And if I remember right, there is at least one transfer ratio that is better with Ascent Premium vs Ascent (apart from the ability to transfer MR to QF).

Where does it say or can you register to get Hilton Honor gold as a benefit in AU? Couldn't find it anywhere... even logging in and looking at my benefits.

Would this be for the USA-issued card or the AU-issued card?
