Why we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! Which hotel? Over the last couple of years I've always received $140 AUD. These days I'd be expecting $150.

At $130 I'd be kicking up a stink.

My most recent stay at one of the FHRs in Tokyo, the hotel credit was converted to the spot rate 14890 Yen

Where are people using the Amex $200 Dining benefit in Melbourne? What are the good restaurants that are under $100 pp?

We mainly used them at Crown restaurants but I am sure there are quite a few other options in CBD/surrounds.

Honestly I can’t see how I could stomach $1,690 (assuming a 13% increase).

Amex Lounges in Australia are lame and overcrowded outside Aus. At that price it is just getting too fare from reality.

They could at least serve actual champagne in the AMEX lounges

There is also a further disconnect when the exchange rate is taken into account. For example, for the PC, GBP650 is $1250 which is $200 less than the current annual fee but with lesser benefits!

We liked Rosetta and Ging Thai but depends on your cuisine preference. Overall you would not be disappointed as they are serve decent food however each one will have different experience

Yes, fixed 2 year promo from its introduction on 4 Jan 2022.
"The redemption periods are between 04 January 2022 - 30 June 2022, 1 July 2022 - 31 December 2022, 1 January 2023 - 30 June 2023 and between 1 July 2023 - 31 December 2023."

The Amazon Prime subscription coverage is also a fixed term promo (to 31 Dec 2025).

You’ll be hard pressed to find anything that isn’t way overpriced at Crown. Not a knock on the food which is often excellent but if you’re looking for value go elsewhere.
