amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply through AFF by 8 April 2025 can also earn 225,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Didn't they offer 15000 points this time last year to add a supp? I'm sure that's what I got but could be wrong.

I recall an offer for 15,000 points, not sure how long ago. I've been holding off adding a supplementary card and have jumped on this offer for 5,000 as it is better than 0.

Quick follow up on this 5k offer - my supp / additional cardholder is under review. I didn't provide a license but they are a real person (sibling) - how long does approval typically take in this scenario? Previous additional holder was approved instantly so this is new to me.

Had anyone recently successfully transferred their Gateway points balance into the higher Ascent programme? If so any tips??

The sign-up bonus on this card has just increased to 225,000 Amex Membership Rewards points until 8 April 2025. :)

This is an exclusive offer. You can access the higher sign-up bonus through AFF:

I feel a little silly asking this, but it's been a while since I've used the travel credit for booking a hotel (been using it for flights for a while now). Previously when it just knocked $450 off the price of a hotel, you had to select the pay now option rather than paying at the hotel.

Now that the travel credit is actually cash back, does the same still apply? Or can one pay at the hotel. I suspect the answer is no.

Which leads to the question, what if I wanted to just book a cheap $200 room and not use the credit. I can't see anything in the booking process with the pay now option that opts you in or out of using the credit.

Ok, I can answer my own question. From the T&Cs

If you select a room over $450 then the option to use the credit shows.

What I can't figure out though is I also have the $400 reserve credit. However, there doesn't appear to be a way to select to use that. If I select a room for $420 there is no option. Even selecting the reserve card for payment doesn't get it to show.

Anyone have a solution that doesn't involve making a phone call?

You need to select which card you want to access the Amex Travel in a few steps before even searching what hotels.

I think I tried that. Ie, before going to the FHR site I selected the reserve card. Can you share a screenshot of what you're referring to please?
