Or call up the customer service centre and get it confirmed, maybe by one or two people... Preferably with something about T&Cs sent out... $900 is not like screwing up a $75 application fee...

Maybe true last year, but not any more. I was told this year I could have a pro-rata refund, and I will get one if I cancel, as I have paid $900 for 1 year access to a product that no longer exists. They won't argue for long if you push the point.

i had a pro-rata refund once when i cancelled a card about 6 months in due to couple of issues. However they call centre rep i cancelled with said there will be no refund. I had to write a letter to their complaints department detailing the issues and explain why i cancelled the card and they granted me the pro-rata refund.

So i think it's not a straight forward policy to refund. You need to show a reason for cancellation and it's at their digression.

I agree that AMEX is losing its appeal and I too will be cancelling it before the next membership fee is due.

Don't pay $900 for mine; but equally it costs some hundreds. So I am sick to death trying to pay for something and being told 'oh no, we don't take that here'. So I end up having to shoot out my (fee-free) CBA Mastercard to pay bills with my costly Amex sleeping in my wallet with 150pc points forgone.

Amex need to fix their model quick smart or they're going to find themselves going down the same path as Diner's or even Bankcard.

I'm not inclined to keep paying for something that I can decreasingly use.

All in all, it's a pay back time. AMEX must suffer a lot from previous years promotions, especially 5 transactions get 1000 points. Someone must pay for it, if AMEX is reducing merchant fees, then their members like us are going to reimburse their costs, such as 1/2 reductions points from gov. telco & insurance company, minimise the travel insurance benefits etc.

Got my fee reduced to $450 in December last year. However, based on them doing that, they would not provide any prorata refund when I cancelled (last week)stating the discount meant that I wasn't entitled to it. Weird logic for mine as I would have thought that i would be entitled to approx 1/3 of $450 as that was my annual fee for the year.

Well i guess that answers your own question. if most people post they are cancelling that most people are cancelling not keeping their cards.

Of course you have a percentage of cardholders who are not so assertive and will just continue to keep the card but AFF board members are usually not that kind.

Find a lot of the customer service staff rather arrogant about the all the changes. Yes, they may not make the changes and card members aren't happy and they are coping the unhappy calls. Wish they'd display their arrogance to management and not card members.

+1 on this one. i called up to talk to them about some of the changes and i really found them extremely arrogant to the point where they are short of saying: "that's just how it is, if you don't like it leave".
don't know where they get those people with absolute no customer service attitude.

look, if you are just got one or in the middle of your year why not keep rather that go through the motions.

i think many people that cancel also cancel because their annual fee is coming up. so why not cancel because there is absolute no benefit, just have to pay another $900.

in actual fact you'd be better off to cancel and then sign-up next month as a new cardholder reaping all the sign-up bonus points etc.

i know this is stupid and involves a lot of paperwork at AMEX end but they apparently don't want it any other way.

Sign-on bonus has gone from 80,000 points to 45k ish....

Plat edge has a better joining value per fee dollar. 10000 pts for $149 = 67 pts/dollar as compared to plat charge card 45000/$900 = 50 pts/dollar

I am just waiting on some bonus pts and then its goodbye plat not so shiny anymore charge card.

I checked the annual summary...71% spent on finance transactions (read, ATO), the rest on travel and shopping.

- multiple supplementary cards, no fee. My children have used these to access lounges when travelling...in the US, with Delta, for instance.

- my Priority Pass

- big spending 'limit'

I can see your reasoning if you:

a) have offspring traveling in North America or South America who have no airline status
b) are traveling outside of the Australia on non oneworld airlines
c) have no status with Qantas
