Was looking at this card also, I already have the velocity platinum which has been great which I will ditch to get this one, hopefully someone can help me however regarding the complimentary flight, on the flight map I have seen Townsville is not included has anyone had any success redeeming a flight from TSV to either BNE or SYD with this card? If not looks like I'll have to stick to the Velocity platinum. Would be strange though if it's not included, Townsville is the 13th largest city in Aus, with many smaller town included.

Unfortunately the free flight is only out of the major cities listed on the map. I was affected by this too as I fly out of the gold coast. I ended up giving the free flight to a friend to come and visit me. The only other way you might want to think about using it as one leg of a trip. It does seem a rather strange restriction.

Proserpine appears to be the Northern limit...only a 3hr drive.
Phone Amex and have a chat. I would think that they would need to offer you a ticket to comply with T&Cs. Being in Qld this would most likely be ex-BNE. Book your ticket BNE to xx_ then cash out the ticket and buy a TSV-xx_ of your choosing.

To clarify how the free flight works. The flight needs to be EX Adelaide,Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Perth or Melbourne. Destinations as specified by the map. Regional airports are a no go as a departure port. The OP only option is to depart from Brisbane in Queensland. Or use the free flight as a leg of a trip for example I was thinking of using the flight as a SYD - Melbourne leg of a Gold Coast to Melbourne trip.

I can confirm this is definitely the case! I've rung AMEX before I see if there was any flexibility in the destinations list and it was a categorical no - which is fair enough I guess.

Thanks for the replies all, I thought that would be the case, much like the Qantas variant which seems to also only depart from the state capitals. The points earn and the statement credits may be enough to sway me to this but I'll wait for the next offer when they have free or low annual fee again.

There is a market for the flights, find someone to sell it to. I sold my daughter and SIL flts to a couple going PER - BME, which recouped $460 out of the 2 pa charges.

Just in-case I miss it - feel free to PM me when the card is offered with a waived annual fee for the first year and I'll sign up.

Is there anyone who held the Platinum Charge when signing up for the Platinum Edge through a referral link and received bonus points?
(I've looked through this and a couple other threads but haven't seen evidence of this scenario.)

My husband held the plat charge card and applied for this. He didn't receive the bonus points. But I think this had more to do with that this was his 4th amex. He held at the time of the application. The plat charge, platinum reserve and the Platinum Velocity card. Where as I just held the Platinum Velocity and did receive the bonus points. I read somewhere on here that the fact that it is linked into your existing ascent account is what precludes you from getting the bonus points. having said all that he was still pretty happy to get the card as its a great little earner and the points do go straight into your charge accounts point account. So those points get all the benefits that your charge points do .

Thanks for your datapoint. Do you recall whether he applied via a referral link or direct through amex?
Yeah the general consensus here is that it's dependent on whether a new additional rewards account needs to be setup, so the case of Edge points being added to Charge points account does not satisfy this condition.

He applied via a referral link on this thread. Then he referred me.

There is a link to get this card for 30K sign on bonus. I applied for it yesterday to take advantage of the Cales Gift Mastercard offer.

As you'd know, my hypothesis would be unlikely in this case, as AMEX isn't opening a new type of award account for you. As the Edge points would (should) be pooled with Charge points in your Ascent Premium account. I thought I'd seen a post about a year ago, where this exact thing had happened (they didn't get the Edge sign-on bonus), but when I looked just now I couldn't find the post (probably didn't look hard enough).

If you decide to go ahead, good luck and let us know the outcome!

Australia's highest-earning Velocity Frequent Flyer credit card: Offer expires: 21 Jan 2025
- Earn 60,000 bonus Velocity Points
- Get unlimited Virgin Australia Lounge access
- Enjoy a complimentary return Virgin Australia domestic flight each year

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

Just double checking: 1 MR point = 1 airline partner point (either VA or SQ as these are the only 2 I would convert to)

TIA

A big thank you the AFFer who recently chose to use my referral link. It is very much appreciated. :)

Of note is that Amex no longer offer a "free flight", instead replacing it with a free $200 travel credit allowing you to select the best deal that suits you. This means for those on Aussie East coast for instance you are not restricted to traveling the East coast or indeed even only domestically. All good in my view. :)

I think everyone should have a platinum edge
not only is this card free for the first year including the $200 credit
you do you get the $200 travel credit every year you have the chance to call them and say you are going to cancel and get bonus points!!!
please use my link

You'll recieve 15,000 Membership Rewards points for each friend approved for a Card using your referral link.
They receive no annual fee for the first year (save $195) plus 10,000 Membership Rewards points when they apply for an American Express® Platinum Edge Credit Card, are approved and spend $750 in their first 3 months of Card Membership. ...American Express

Just pointing out that the sign on bonus is currently 10,000pts, not what is stated in the thread title. All the usual benefits apply, the $200 travel credit, etc, fee-free ($195) year etc.
Still a great deal with c.$400 saving for one of the best earning cards for everyday family spending...3 pts/$ on all supermarket shopping.
