Why would it be any different if you had applied for the Edge first then the Platinum as both earn Ascent points.

From what I've read from others, anecdotally, sounds like it is possible to get the bonus points for the same program (i.e. Ascent, in this case) if you 'upgrade' to a higher tier of card in the same program - i.e. from the Edge to the Charge, but not if you 'downgrade' (i.e. Charge to the Edge).

@Blueythecat, agree this is a good long term card with excellent day to day points earn, so one for the long haul.

Yep my theory is the same, if AMEX need to open a new rewards "program" account for you, you'll get the points. If they don't you won't.

In this example if you open an Plat Charge whilst holding the Edge, AMEX will need to open a new rewards account for you (an Ascent Premium account in this case). Thus my theory is you'll get the points - no guarantees though of course! If you already have a Charge card, you have an Ascent Premium account, if you open an Edge card then, they'll credit the points to the Ascent Premium account, thus no new rewards account is open (and thus no bonus points :().

Hope this makes sense. Oh and it is of course nothing more than a theory (although it seems to be backed up by quite a bit of evidence).

So what if you close the platinum card and then get the Edge? I still would like to be able to get the signup bonus for Platinum Edge.

Assuming you wait the 12mth (18mth depending on the card) standout period then you'll get it. If you don't wait the 12mths you won't - I know this later one from personal experience :-(

Just for anyone interested, I applied for this one to get the 30k bonus on the last day of the offer. I'm a current plat charge holder as well. The edge account opened and a separate ascent rewards program also opened. I now have both the plat charge and plat edge both on my Amex logon and appear to be earning points into their respective programs and I did indeed receive the 30k bonus points when I hit the target spend I'll give Amex a bell tomorrow and see if they can consolidate all of the points into the premium account.

Are you sure you want to do that? Wouldn't that just be highlighting to AMEX that you received the bonus points when you shouldn't have? Personally, I wouldn't want to risk it.

Think I'd take Adelee's advice, maybe hold off three or four months and then get AMEX to combine the accounts. Of course it might not be a problem at all.

Yes you both make a good point. Won't do any harm letting them sit in ascent for a while. There'a no immediate plans for them anyway.
