How much in cash does 50k in points offset the $195 fee?
Fee free first year was best offer!
$200 Amex credit..... What can you actually spend on and save.... As flights are premium priced?

50k membership rewards points is worth quite a lot! To me I value them at 2c/pt so that is worth a $1000. Of course everyone’s use cases will be different and thus they’ll value them differently.

I use the $200 on domestic flights where the price, in my experience, seems to be the same as the airlines themselves.

I’ve seen other people report good success using their travel credit for hotel bookings.

All in all I’d say it’s a pretty good offer for the Edge!

I use my platinum edge to earn points for AM and my Mastercard for QFF. I've also used the $200 travel credit for hotels and international flights. I found AMEC travel had the same price as the carriers and very similar prices to the hotels.

Great find, this puts the recent point hack exclusives to shame!

I'm contemplating signing up for this offer before it ends. I'm new to AMEX so assume I can get the bonus points? Also wondering if anyone knows which retailers you can earn 3 points per $1 at?

If you have never held an AMEX before you will eligible for the bonus points. You will earn 3 points at the major supermarkets (Woolworths, Coles, IGA), I've also discovered its 3 points at Kmart and Kmart Tyre Auto.

I was shocked when Officeworks also gave 3 points, looks like most of the major retailers offshoots give the extra points.

How many velocity points would 50k transfer as?

50k MR would be 50k Velocity unless theres an offer to get an extra percentage on transfers at the time.

Recently there was an offer where 0-100k MR transfers got 15% extra points, up to 40% extra if transferring...cough...750001 points or moreo_O

Something to think about as well for the transfer. If you are ultimately going to redeem the 50K MR for Krisflyer points (KFF), do not swap to Velocity (even with the nice 15% bonus @FreddyFattler mentioned above).
Math:

1:1 MR to KFF = 50000 KFF

1:1 MR to VFF (+ 15%Bonus) = 57500 VFF
1.35:1 VFF to KFF = 57500/1.35 = 42592 KFF

Thanks, applied and got approved. I chose the minimum limit of 3000. I have never had a card direct with Amex prior, hopefully they wont' make an issue having amex card through the banks, thought it says you are eligible if you have had a bank issued one.

Bank issued Amex cards won’t effect your eligibility for the bonus points :-)
