You can hold two Amex issued cards plus a bank issued Amex card. As long as she meets the application criteria she won't have a problem.

See the credit card thread as almost all questions have been answered there.

You probably won't get the bonus if you already have an Amex-issued card.

There are plenty of reports on here where people have been successful in obtaining sign on bonuses, while holding another Amex card. Myself included. As I've posted elsewhere I've been very successful over 8 years. I've held all the platinum cards and churn the top tier cards and start at back the bottom and work my way back to platinum cards. She has nothing to lose. The flight and insurance will offset part of the annual fee.

YMMV.

Puppysparkes you are lucky ...... I could not do the very same thing with Amex 7 months ago. ( applied for a Business Amex) I canceled the card and got a refund. But so far my subscription to a certain newspaper has not been amended. Phew

A couple of work colleagues have made a healthy haul of over 400K over the last 12 months. One of them was only recently denied the sign on bonus for the discovery card. However they've gone pretty hard since learning how to churn, so it was inevitable. Something like 5 cards each from memory. They also started off with base cards and hit platinum cards. Always adhering to the rule of 2 Amex issued and 1 bank issued rule. Try this tip, instead of cancelling a card, call Amex and get them to transfer you across to the card you want. You get the scripted advice about how it's only for new card holders, but the points have posted. That's worked for me a few times.

During the 80,000 bonus point referral offer in the middle of the year, I cancelled my discovery and applied for the ultimate card a few days later - I received the bonus points, no problems.

Does your GF want to hold onto the discovery?

This is interesting. I just got the 110k bonus for the Ultimate Card and was considering going for the Explorer in a few weeks time. Would you suggest cancelling the Ultimate and then applying for the Explorer or ring and ask to swap over? Avoiding another credit check would be appealing to me if I can still get the sign on bonus.

I don't know about a swap but the 110K is gained by following a referral link - I think it may only be 100K if you apply over the phone?

Yep the 110k for the Ultimate Card was through a referral link. Just looking for the best way to now get a signup bonus for the Explorer. If a swap could still get the bonus and at the same time avoid a credit check and presumable another annual fee then that would be perfect.

Even if I knew your churn history it's a roll of the dice. There are way too many variables. I stumbled upon that option by chance. Each time I did the change by phone, it was to a base level card so the sign on bonuses were unknown to me, but appreciated when spotted on statement. Weigh up what it's worth to you and any pending travel plans you have and whether you're prepared to take a hit to your Veda score. I was denied an application a few months back (broke the golden rule noted up thread) and it knocked 192 points of my score. Needless to say no applications for a while.
