AMEX referrals

Not sure where to post this question so here goes :

Does anyone know if you must hold the actual card you are wishing to refer friends and family to?

For example i hold the Velocity Platinum however when i go to create a link for the qantas platinum it actually gives me a link using the card number from the Velocity platinum. Issue is, AMEX wouldnt have my QFF number so not sure if i would benefit from the referral points if someone applied using it?

You don't have to hold the actual card, but you are only limited to the cards within the same product family. For example, if you hold a Velocity Escape card, you're able to make a Velocity Escape or a Velocity Platinum referral. You can jump over to the Amex referral page and select the card(s) you currently hold, and the next page shows you cards you're able to make referrals for.
