The Gold Card was offered to me for free so as to provide me with extended warranty on purchases. Even though the earn rate is 1pt/$1 with the Gold Card, there may be times when extended warranty is deemed more valuable than the extra 0.5pt/$1 that the RM offers.

So, I guess it's just choice.
