Hi

New to the forum. Sorry if this questions was asked (probably a million times  )

I'm looking to consolidate my credit cards into single card with some sort of rewards with it. I have Qantas FF membership so I do have idea how it works but I'm just tossing around the idea of getting Amex card for the amex rewards points as opposed to Qantas FF points.

I spend around 10 - 20k on credit card p.a. and don't want these to go to waste if I can get points out of it. Will I be better off getting Qantas FF or Amex? I'm not sure what's the $ per point but I know Qantas worked out around 0.01$ per point when I claim gift cards

Any ideas if I should just save the headache and go for Qantas FF or go Amex???

Although I use Amex for >90% of all my transactions, I'd never go Amex alone because at the end of the day there are a few situations you'll hit where Amex isn't accepted. At a minimum I'd keep 1x Mastercard or Visa card + Amex.

I haven't flown with QF for ages now, so personally I'm toying with giving up storing QFF points. I won't fly JQ, and domestically VA has been stepping up to the fight in a way that suits me entirely. For this reason I am now chugging away with MR points which are very flexible (8 airlines I think) and also some direct to Velocity earn.

Are you hoping to redeem your FF points against flights or FF shop/gift cards in the future? I think most here will strongly recommend using FF points for flights in order to redeem best value. Business class flights generally redeem at 3c/point or greater, Economy class in my experience only redeems at 0.7-1c each on either QF or DJ, others may value their Y redemptions slightly higher.

An important thing to remember is that the most common Amex MR program, Ascent, won't let you transfer to QF. If you keep only one card and its not a QF earner, take care with your stored QFF points as they will expire in 12-18 months without activity.

[edit: If you decide to stay QFF the Woolies EDR CC is probably going to be hard to beat. I think there is still a bonus 16K points on offer at the moment and it earns at a respectable 1:1$ ratio and is accepted (almost) everywhere. At $89/year, its a pretty decent earner for many here]

Oh, and my apologies, welcome to AFF Jacky18

How rude of me not to start with that :)

No problem mate :D In fact much appreciating your response! :)

I was thinking about the points too and I 'sort' of made up my mind that QFF is a better go for me. Not sure about VA as I very seldom travels with Virgin, let alone checking out their what's being available :)

thanks for your comments Moopere :)
