I just rang VA to find out the details of the J class Companion fare offer. It's a bit vague, as there is not a set amount 'off' the fares published on the VA website .

VA offer an amount of around 50% of their highest J class fare which is not published on the VA website ( at least not until all the cheaper fares are sold) . From what I could gather, this fare to Europe comes in at around $14,900 plus taxes per person. The companion fare would therefore offer two seats for this price. It applies to VA flight numbers only on VA or EY metal. It does NOT include flights on SQ.

Interestingly, the offer does NOT include any destinations in Asia.

The US (west coast) is around $12,900 for two in this offer. East coast is around $14,900. Flights can be VA or DL flight numbers..

Oh -and the number to call is 1800 621 524 and then press option 1 (ignore the fact that it says qantas..). Dialing the 1300 number on the back of the CC will just mean spending a LOT of time on hold, only to be transferred again once you are through.

Yes, in my experience it is a non-benefit. I didn't get the card for this "benefit", but when I did call up about it, even the Call centre staff pointed me to the Virgin site and said you will usually always get a better deal with them. I was looking for LAX J class and the price was about $13k from memory, for which I would get two seats. I got the card for the points, which allowed me to do an upgrade from a Flex Y so I was happy!
