... as well as a few extra hours of your time ...

I was looking at some MEL-AKL return flights and noticed that routing via SYD has the same base red e-deal fare. (Currently $90 each way)

In these cases the all up return cost of the current "Sale" fare was showing as $634 r/t via SYD with the red e-deal options to the right on the same flights coming to $440.

The direct flights costs ~$420 all up; and earns 40 SC. Routing via SYD each way costs ~$450 and earns 60 SC's. (including the CC fee).

In Oz, an additional 20 SC's for an additional $30 is not too shabby.

Notes:
  • This is not the case for SYD-AKL rt fares
  • AKL-MEL r/t can route via SYD as well for ~NZD460 (~AUD380)

The routing rules for the QREDT fare are:
  • ex SYD
    • SYD-AKL
  • ex MEL
    • MEL-AKL
      MEL-SYD/MEL-AKL

In the F Lounge. ;) for the plats anyway.

I thought you had already reached LTG so I thought you might want to spend some time at home for a change.

Since I have to go for business, I will go. I've been to AKL ~ 20 times in the last three years - in fact it's sort of like going to PER, except:
  1. A WP gets to enjoy the Flounge

The flights are also shorter! And at least the airports you travel between are reasonable (cf. the zoo called PER).

Disadvantages do include, however:
  • Immigration and customs clearance required. Not such a big diff, especially if you have an express card and no declarables, but if you get extra screening sometimes it can get painful. I got benched at AKL - didn't like it. (Lucky wasn't busted for anything.)
  • Less flights on Trans-Tas than to PER.
  • Since Trans-Tas is International, International rules apply (i.e. check-in times, no OLCI, LAG, etc.)

At least a hop across the Tasman is more palatable for a weekend getaway idea compared to jumping across to the other end of the nation.

Direct routing: $420 for 40 SC = $10.50 / SC
Route via SYD: $450 for 60 SC = $7.5 / SC

Unless you are really looking for shortest travel time or would be sick of flying, I think there isn't a difficult choice to be made from the above. :)

If you hold an NZ or Aussie passport, you can do it for cheaper than that. Buy a MEL-SYD-AKL thru qantas.com.au and a AKL-SYD-MEL through qantas.co.nz and you can get the flights for ~$410 return (or if eliminating SYD it will cost, depending on date of travel, only about $365 AUD return by combining the two one ways.)

Actually, Purchase a one-way MEL-//-AKL, one or more return AKL-//-MEL-//-AKL and a one-way AKL-//MEL to maximise saving.

Really good when you have planned monthly business to attend to in NZ over several months ... ;)

Calling PER a zoo - that's a rather charitable description of the god forsaken poor mans excuse of a heckhole Westralia Airports Corp. tries to pass off as an airport.

Going slightly OT, as a sandgroper I can't stand the place. I detest T2 common use as the departure lounge is small, badly designed, and zero money has been invested in improving access and design - it's for the most part in the same configuration as left behind by Ansett save for a few food places, a lick of paint and a newsagent.

And T1 - I can't stand that place and it's the reason why I bought a QP membership so I can stay out of the departure lounge with a bit more overseas flying this year. As for the arrivals hall, battling through that rabbit warren is a PITA.

It's like going around a massive snake, stopping for ages while your baggage eventually gets excreted by the slow, small and god awful baggage belt (assuming someone doesn't grab your luggage causing you to bolt across to them, new mobile dropping out of pocket in the process). And then of course there is the customs/quarantine side of things - where I make a point of finding something to declare or purchasing something small that needs a slightly closer look just so I can get in and out of there very quickly.

Yes, choosing the red channel means that your documents will be checked no less than three times before finally getting to the queuing point but it's faster particularly if two or more planes have landed and you're at the end of it all.

Sorry, venting over. Please return to regular transmission.

Mr!

Not particularly.

red e-deal:
MEL ADL 69 10 O 6.9
MEL CBR 75 10 O 7.5 ...etc

or SFO-//-ATL, Cost $847.50, SC's 270 $/SC = $3.13 ...

In any case I was pointing out something for those intrepid Melbourne-ites who have the need or urge to head to AKL. :D
