Well I got one out of three , happy to say I did get 8% of the trifecta and 1% of the first 4, might have to head up to Singapore next week to celebrate.

I got the winner. Should have put on more but like to spread my bets.

By my reckoning Markis10 you got roughly ~1400 dollars?

No 6 in the $5 offiice sweep for me:- better odds than the TAB or bookie :)

My horse placed second :)
I went to my first ever Melbourne Cup function ( local surfhouse function). Had so many bubbles I nearly forgot to watch the actual race

The only poor form of the day was that gent from Emirates marketing he went on and on with his airline promo, very bad taste I must say, needs a good wrap over the buckles or someplace else.

They shelled out enough to make it their right to go on and on, and another year where Godolphin miss winning.

My celebrations at picking up a nice collect were soured by the news that Verema had to be put down, very sad to hear any horse that passes during a "sport", I don't understand why humans can survive with a broken leg from 2 when horses can't with 1 from 4 but I am sure it makes sense, still very sad.

agree they do shell out lots shekels, still poor form, all my guests here today thought so too.

Of the ~100,000 at the track many 1000's never see a horse or see the race, even on TV. A signifcant number only see it on TV at the track or out back in the members car park.

Did he mention a particular unimportant airline partner ;)

Generally they put them down because of the expense and probably it difficult to keep a horse calm for a couple of weeks whilst they are suspended.

Considering Verema was a mare, you could have made the argument that if she was rehabilitated, she could have paid back her way in terms of foals.

Or if they couldn't heal the bone, they could have given her a prosthetic.

I had a little each way on the winner; not because it was the favourite but because a family member knows one of the owners :D

Very sad to hear - makes me relieved that I skipped following it this year.

The logistics of keeping a very heavy, highly strung animal still for 6+ weeks are well nigh impossible in most cases - casts, or surgical implants can't substitute for the original strength of the bone. Flotation tanks have been tried, but I don't know if one has succeeded.
I don't know but would imagine that a horse of the calibre to enter a Melbourne cup would be insured for enough to cover the vet bills.

How was the jockey? I also also ponder on a sport that requires an ambulance to follow the participants closely.

The jockey was OK, and I understand a bit more now about why it has to happen, apparently horses need 4 legs at all times and the period to heal a bone would be agony for them. I was very disappointed with the Ch7 coverage, in regards the incident, it was almost like it never happened, I suppose thats entertainment, celebrate the winners while ignoring the tragedy.

With that little oversight and the two incidents over "treatments", I feel a lot of integrity was lost today.

Yes! And I have to add something to go over 10 characters.

I deliberately left out the favourite and backed 7 horses for win & place with only Mount Athos filling a place. And my 3 horses in the sweep did nothing either.

A friend spent $3.50 on a trifecta standing out 6/7 to win, with a number of horses for 2nd and Mount Athos for 3rd for a 25% collect. After the race he told me he lost but then looked at his TAB account later to see $956 in there. So he has somehow chosen Red Cadeaux in there even though he did not want to include it in the trifecta.

Divine intervention?
